Ketones in urine

I'm 12+4 weeks and I've had awful morning sickness which is now subsiding. I went to the doctor yesterday and he tested my urine sample. He told me I have 4+ ketones in my urine, my pulse is fast and my kidneys are basically dry and dehydrated. He tried admitting me to hospital, I refused as I'm terrified at the thought of being on a drip. So he gave me 2 days to try and drink as much water as possible and flush the ketones out. I'm also losing weight rapidly (9kg over the last 6 weeks). Other than drinking gallons of water, is there anything specific I should be eating to help remove the ketones? Anything else I should be doing? I know it's silly that I refused to go to the hospital but I'm glad he gave me a chance to fix the problem myself

I had 4+ ketones as well with awful morning sickness. Lost a stone in the first seven weeks. I went through four drip bags in 24 hours in hospital. I could never have kept down enough water to flush them out. You might just be putting off the inevitable.

With both my pregnancies I ended up in hospital on a drip, honestly it will make you feel 100x better! Wasn't great being in hospital and stuff but genuinely worth it.

To help with ketones eat sweets and foods high in carbohydrates. I was in regularly for hyperemesis and this is what my consutant recommended.

Crisps, bread, honey, fruit, pasta are all sources of carbs. If you need more suggestions then let us know.

Hi, I had similar to you, recommended to go into hospital but couldn't face it either. I bought some urine test strops from amazon so I could monitor ketones reducing myself, and did what I could with food and fluid. I found lucosade sport good as has some sugar in it as well as the fluid. Good luck, but definitely don't rule out a hospital trip if things aren't moving in the right direction xx

You need carbs and sugar.
Drink not only water but full sugar pop as well.

Good luck! And if you have to be admitted, the drip really isnt that bad. The only bit that hurts for 2 seconds is them putting the cannula in.

I've been there had 4+ ketones but wasn't given an option I was sent straight to hospital to have a drip. I also couldn't have kept enough food and liquid down to make a difference. Hospital and a drip really isn't that bad. Actually combined with the meds they gave me made me feel so much better.
Have you discussed medication with your gp to try and help?

Fluteytooting · 06/02/2020 20:12

I was in every fortnight when I was pregnant. You’ll feel much better if you go and it’s really not that bad. The relief was immense for me!

Hollywhiskey · 06/02/2020 20:52

I was in with 4+ ketones with both of mine, j had five bags of fluid in 24 hours at one point.
The doctor told me that it's dangerous for the baby if you get terribly dehydrated because eventually the body will draw from the amniotic fluid. It was also dangerous because my blood pressure was through the floor - I couldn't even sit up on a chair while I was waiting to see the doctor and had to lie on the floor, so I could have fallen and landed on bump.
Please just go to hospital. It's not fun but you'll feel so much better for it. They also put anti sickness medication in my drip which was actually AMAZING and I even felt like eating hospital food!

eyemask · 06/02/2020 20:56

Please don't be scared of the drip op, they're not bad at all. In the meantime drink whatever you can stomach, fizzy drinks etc

MrsH497 · 06/02/2020 20:57

@Fluteytooting same for me when they added the medication to the IV it was brilliant! My pulse was fast and bp was low but I felt so much better once I started being properly treated. I tried to manage at home for a while but when you're not keeping water down it's time to ask for help!

ChocoLover7 · 07/02/2020 00:11

Thank you for your responses everyone. I've been gulping down water like there's no tomorrow and thankfully haven't thrown it back up! I have my appointment tomorrow afternoon so will see what happens
