I've just found out I'm pregnant and my last 3, 2 born I suffered hyperemisis, I've decided to change my diet and become a vegan to see if this helps, anyone out there that can shed some light on this, been though the same thing.

Following with interest as currently very miserable and only 10 weeks and 2 days in 😩 gone off everything and lost 6kg . Not been diagnosed with HG but so so sick and been told I can no longer take anti emetics as I’m epileptic and it was triggering me

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 02/02/2020 19:46

Is it dairy products/meat that are triggering the sickness?

yadayadayesokay · 02/02/2020 19:50

Sorry to say that I’ve been vegan for many years and this didn’t stop me having hyperemesis twice. Anything is worth a try though, it might make a difference with you. I’ve been told that the earlier you begin medication the better to get it under control.

Nelbert19 · 02/02/2020 19:57

I’m 15 weeks and still struggling with hyperemesis. I’d say limiting yourself to a vegan diet is going to make it even more difficult to get the nutrients you need - just eat what you can, when you can!
If you are going to follow a vegan diet, make sure you’ve done your research to get the calcium, iron and protein that you need while pregnant

I didn’t have much choice when I had HG. Many days I couldn’t eat anything at all and when I could eat it was very specific. Tomatoes and boiled eggs, haribo sweets and McDonald’s burger, were the only things I could eat on good days and not all of them on any one day.

Bol87 · 02/02/2020 21:20

I’ve had HG in both my pregnancies & I probably became vegan just from my food aversions. I had a very specific list of safe foods that varied from week to week. Namely bread, mash potato, crisps, chips, crackers .. beige carbs! And occasionally tinned peaches.

Can’t say my diet had a remote effect on my HG. Prior to pregnancy, I ate predominantly vegetarian food with meat maybe once/twice a week. I was fit, healthy, ate masses of veg, fruit etc & worked out 3/4 times a week. Bang on 6 weeks with both, I got HG. My life came to an abrupt halt & for 16-20 weeks, I was housebound, didn’t eat a single veg & lived off wherever my horrific nausea would allow me to eat.

No doctor has ever suggested diet could make it better.. it’s your body reacting badly to the hormones.. 🤷🏼‍♀️ The best advice I’ve had is to get meds started ASAP so they are in your system & hopefully helping as soon as possible to prevent dehydration etc!

Diet wont change hyperemesis unfortunately, and you'll find you'll eat whatever you can stomach that day. Get on the meds asap it may help soften the blow.

Oh my goodness are you me? I'm pregnant with my 4th, 2 children + 1 mmc.. Awful hg with all my pregnancies.. Also turned vegan 6 months ago.. I'm only 5 weeks so the sickness hasn't started yet, but I've got a tens machine to use on my wrists, sea bands and some mints with b12 from amazon.. I've given up on the diet and side of it.. I'll eat what I can, when I can.. And congratulations by the way :)

lilyj13 · 03/02/2020 14:07

Thank you for your honesty, I mean I'm not usually vegan but I'm trying anything, I'm 5 weeks as well and saw a doctor today a make one, didn't have a clue!
Have you tried ginger? I'm not joking 🙃
My taste buds in my mouth are changing tastes horrible, I'm so scared but I'm going to try my best to do this without giving up my job.
I think we need all the support we can get, I mean give us a break hyperemisis just one nice pregnancy would be great but I no it's going to kick in soon I have a strong feeling 😩 keep strong girls.
Thank you regarding the vegan diet. Last pregnancies with both my girls I couldn't eat either, I just thought adding hormones from meat into my body wouldn't help, I'm trying anything 😩

I was so desperate last time I tried hypnotherapy, I was able to come home and make almyself something to eat in my kitchen at 9 weeks.. After not being able to go in the kitchen for the whole pregnancy.. Not sure if it was that or that I had a mmc but I'm gonna try acupuncture too this time lol I'm so desperate to stay out of hospital and in my house! When I was pregnant with my daughter I moved out for 3 months cause there was a ''smell'' in my house haha

lilyj13 · 03/02/2020 19:35

Oh I might try that, im so so scared it's just crazy, to think you can't be happy or excited.
I feel a little nauseas today and my taste buds are a little off! I'm just waiting for it to arrive and have to deal with it

Pregnancy made me lactose intolerant so that part of being vegan would have worked.
But it was so hard to eat anything, that idea of must-eat vegan rest of diet would have been a disaster.
One pregnancy I had a can of tuna every day (because that's what I could keep down).

Good luck with your quest.

Yupimahelecopter · 03/02/2020 21:01

Yeah I feel the same, I'm worried I haven't had the hg yet but I'm scared to get it too. I did read something about going wheat and grain free before getting pregnant helped but I think it's a bit late for that now lol when it starts my diet will be flat lemonade and ice lollies lol

lilyj13 · 04/02/2020 08:58

Ahh man! Wow so many different pregnancies and diets! I mean I'm trying my hardest, I've done well eating vegan so far but I really don't know if will help! This morning I had some toast and some boiled water with a slice a lemon! I've also been taking some tablets.
Keep me updated if you do find anything that helps.
I bought a nutri bullet so I can make smoothies so the placenta can get all the goodness it needs. I just know it's gonna come at 6 weeks, I'm a childminder so it's going to be so different.
If it comes to wanting to eat anything I do will
