Washing baby clothes

I have read that some people wash baby's clothes before they put them in them for the first time. Is this a thing? Do I need to wash all of baby's clothes before he comes? And does this include sheets etc? FTM here so sorry if this is a stupid question! Also, we wash our clothes with non bio anyway... is this ok for baby? Or do we need to get a special detergent/freshener for baby's clothes?

Lord if people will tell you they didn't bother and their babies were fine.

We washed most of them. The ones we didn't wash gave DC a rash Sad

I washed all the clothes for him newborn. Non bio and the white comfort. Now he is older I don't bother.

RitaTheBeater · 02/02/2020 18:23

I washed all of mine because I've been to a clothing factory in China.

DramaAlpaca · 02/02/2020 18:24

I never did. It didn't occur to me to. I did use non-bio when I washed them though.

Topseyt · 02/02/2020 18:26

If they were bought from new then I didn't wash them before first wearing. If they were bought from a charity shop then I did.

MunchyMunchkin · 02/02/2020 18:28

Didn’t wash and didn’t buy anything special to wash them with once she was born. Just used our regular wash liquid. Will do same for number 2.

Lalapurple · 02/02/2020 18:28

I did and do- and for my own clothes now too - just the same washing powder I use for everything (that is non-bio, but apparently there is little evidence that bio is bad for skin).

Although if you have lots of clothes it might be an idea to hold back washing everything apart from what you might need straight away until you know the baby's size as you might find some stuff doesn't fit and if you haven't washed you could return or sell on.

You don't need to... but I did and it was so much fun Grin

I just washed the newborn stuff first off. I found that I exchanged loads of his 0-3 for larger sizes as he was a big baby and we were overwhelmed with gifted clothes in one particular size.

PenOrPencil · 02/02/2020 18:36

I know lots of people don’t and they are absolutely fine..., but you should always wash new clothes before you wear them! They are dirty and full of dye and other chemicals.
I would only wear something straight from a shop in an emergency.
Bio or non-bio doesn’t matter, don’t use softener cause that’s just more unnecessary chemicals.

R2D2abc · 02/02/2020 18:43

Washed everything as would do with my clothes.

meow1989 · 02/02/2020 18:48

I loved having all of his little vests and babygros hanging out to dry for the first time, I even ironed them! Now, i dont iron and new clothes go straight on Smile

I washed everything with fairy detergent and hypo allergenic softener. I also wondered on this and then thought about all the people who may have touched those clothes before they went into DD and decided to wash. She's 2 months old now and I did have to put her into some new but unwashed sleep suits the other day as we ran out and I couldn't run downstairs to get more from the laundry while she was screaming on the changing table - she hasn't suffered any ill effects luckily!

Mysocalledlifex · 02/02/2020 19:21

I washed all mine, i just thought everyone would do that, u dont know where they have been or who has touched them.

ThinkPink71 · 02/02/2020 19:24

I know this sounds dumb....do people put them in the dryer as well? Scared of shrinking them!!

BecauseReasons · 02/02/2020 19:29

Yes and yes. Do wash before first wear, for your own clothes as well. They are often sprayed with fungicides to stop them going mouldy in transit- personally, I don't want that on my baby. As for tinker drying, check the label and follow the instructions.

sqirrelfriends · 02/02/2020 19:29

Yes, washed and put away during my sadly short lived nesting phase.

I still wash his new stuff now at 18m, don't bother with mine though.

BecauseReasons · 02/02/2020 19:30

Tumble drying, not tinker!
