Has anyone needed to have the Anti-D immunoglobulin injection during pregnancy?

Hi there,
After months and months of fertility treatment, I found out a couple of days ago I'm pregnant! I'm delighted but I miscarried a few months ago so naturally I'm also a little worried. I am Rh Negative and I know my sperm donor is Rh positive therefore I'll possibly need the anti D injection. I've read it's at 28 weeks but I wondered has anyone had to have it sooner? I'm just thinking in terms of being as safe as possible and because of the previous miscarriage (with the same donor) I'm just a little worried. Thank you in advance x

Hi. I had it with both my pregnancies. As far as I know it can’t be done earlier, as the dosage only lasts so long and has to obviously last until latest possible birth date.

I had two injections I bled at 20 weeks so had one then and again at 28 weeks

Sorry forgot to add sometimes women do need it earlier in pregnancy; speak to your midwife about exactly when you'd need to come in, it's related to certain circumstances such as bleeding, amniocentesis, trauma during pregnancy etc

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

I had it (unnecessarily it turned out) with DS as I am Rh- my donor is Rh+ but DS has exactly he same blood type as me.

With this pregnancy (currently 20 weeks) they have developed a blood test they do about 16 weeks which checks your babys blood type from your blood. This baby is Rh+ (same donor) so I will need Anti D at 28 weeks.

Check with your midwife when you book in at around 8-10 weeks who will refer you for tests but they usually tell you to contact them if you have bleeding etc. and they will take your history so will advise if you need to do anything differently because of your miscarriage.

I've just had the blood test to check baby's blood group too. Amazing what can be done now!

@ATmummy That is good to know. Thank you. I'm definitely going to speak to my GP/midwife to see what needs to happen to be on the safe side. I do feel much better after reading your comments. I hope all is well with you & your pregnancy xx
