Bleeding and cramps at 6 weeks - worth private scan?

Hi - feeling worried and would appreciate others advice and experience.

I have had strong cramps ever since I found out I was pregnant 3 weeks ago.

As they were getting worse, on Monday at 5 weeks I went to epu and had a scan and they could see the gestational and yolk sac which they said was right for 5 weeks. No baby or heartbeat which they said was normal at that point.

Yesterday (5 weeks, 6 days preg) I had a trickle of bright pink/red blood followed by light brown discharge/blood, about the same as the start of a period, which has since stopped.

At epu they said it could be a miscarriage or could not, they can't say at this stage. Need to wait 2 weeks for a scan on nhs to see if viable conclusively.

Did anyone else have this and go on the have a healthy baby? Or the opposite? Is it worth getting a private scan a week early at 7 weeks (next weekend)? Any help appreciated as I'm feeling low and finding it hard to cope with the uncertainty Sad

Or would even earlier for a scan be worth it? Thanks!

I'm confused how you knew you were pregnant 3 weeks ago if you are only 6 weeks pregnant now? When you miss a period you are generally classed as 4 weeks pregnant, or am I being thick?

I don’t have any experience in this but didn’t want to read and run. Personally, if you can afford a private scan I would probably arrange one, the waiting is always the worst.

Fwiw a lot of people have some minor bleeding throughout pregnancy and all is okay. When I had a previous mc at 6 weeks, it was a lot of pain (more than period pains) and a large amount of blood. fingers crossed for you! X

@bobstersmum I took a first response test before my period was due and it showed as positive

Ahhh OK. I've been there with the bleeding, twice. The best thing you can do is take it easy and rest as much as possible. I was told there would be severe pain if it was bad news. Once there was a heavy pulling sensation, with heavy bleeding and I was terrified. However everything was fine. Fingers crossed for you 🍀

Well you can't stop a miscarriage so from that point of view it isn't "worth it". You could do one if you want some answers how it's going on a particular day.

You've probably already googled that bleeding in pregnancy is really common, as are miscarriages. I hope it will go well for you.

Just bear in mind that if you go ahead with a private scan, it may not give you much more information that the NHS scan. They wait two weeks to give everything time to get a bit bigger. If you start bleeding heavily, call the EPU again for advice.

Thanks for replying @Annafs - was your pain and bleeding constant or intermittent? Thanks xx
