What clothes do you take the baby home in?!

Silly question maybe but my DC1 was born in the summer so we walked her home in the pram from hospital wearing a babygro and cardigan!
DC2 is expected mid Feb and I'm presuming we'll be heading home in the car. Obviously i know baby needs to be in layers to keep warm, but I presume no ski suit as he/she will be going into the car seat?
Just packing my bag now and trying to make sure I have everything!! Vest, babygro, thick cardigan, hat/gloves and blanket to cover - is this enough?

That's what we took DD home in a few weeks ago. She was only outside for a minute between hospital and car, and car and home, so no real chance to get cold.

ChillyB · 30/01/2020 10:18

Get a Morcck car seat blanket they are so useful!

HavelockVetinari · 30/01/2020 10:19

Yes that sounds fine. Best wishes for a good birth!

SmileCheese · 30/01/2020 10:19

We just took baby home in a vest and baby grow and covered him with a blanket in the car seat. They won't be outside for long and once in the car with the heating on it will get warm quickly.

Belliniteeny · 30/01/2020 10:20

The star fleece baby blankets you can buy on not on the high street are amazing and safe to wear in car seat!

PragmaticWench · 30/01/2020 10:21

Definitely a Morcck blanket, they're brilliant as you can reach back in the car and unwrap them easily.

Bluebutterfly90 · 30/01/2020 10:22

DS was just in a vest and baby gro with a hat on and a blanket over him when he was strapped into the carseat because it was chilly.

FraglesRock · 30/01/2020 10:39

Please don't use a snowsuit in a car seat.

Spam88 · 30/01/2020 10:49

We just put DS in a vest, baby grow and hat with a fleece blanket over him. We did take a cardi and mittens but there was no need for them with the blanket.

LolaLollypop · 30/01/2020 10:49

I'm not, hence the question.

Thanks all! I think I've already got most of the stuff I need. May need a warmer hat actually as the newborn ones I have are more summertime ones. I'll check out those Morcck blankets too Smile

Vest, babygrow and hat. And another vote for the Morckk blanket, they are beyond useful for wintery babies. Makes everything much easier!

FraglesRock · 30/01/2020 10:58

Ah good. Sorry couldn't work out which way you meant it.

Just think about layers, add a hat too, then remove when the car is warm.

MissRainbowBrite · 30/01/2020 11:09

DD was born late Feb and she came home in a vest, babygrow, hat and a thick jersey cardigan with a blanket over her bottom half. I had bought a snowsuit and many warm items for trips out in the prom and didn't use any of it as we had a very mild late Winter that year and it wasn't needed.

Elbeagle · 30/01/2020 11:12

I have two winter babies... long sleeved vest, sleepsuit, cardigan, hat and blanket to cover.

OneTooManyBathtimes · 30/01/2020 11:15

I've never bothered with cardigans, both children got too hot in them. They both came home in a vest and babygrow, with a blanket over them. Maybe a hat.

Spam88 · 30/01/2020 11:15

Surely no shop bought hats actually fit newborns anyway? We used the one the hospital provided.

Elbeagle · 30/01/2020 11:18

We used the hospital hat too.

bunnyrabbit93 · 30/01/2020 11:47

Both my DD were winter babies and I put them in a vest baby grow hat gloves and a blanket over I added a extra blanket for the walk to the car. The midwife told me not to over dress as they don't regulate their temperature very well and we tend to put the heater on in the car. All the best for the new arrival Smile

LolaLollypop · 30/01/2020 11:51

I don't think I got a hospital hat when my DD arrived!

Ok - noted not to overdress. It's mild atm but knowing my luck we'll be in the middle of a snowstorm on 16th Feb!

Thanks for the well wishes - feeling very close now!

Hat, bodysuit and sleep suit. Plus warm blanket. That's what I did for all of mine and will do for baby number 4 in April.

Elbeagle · 30/01/2020 12:12

We didn’t get a hat for our summer born, but got tiny knitted ones for our 2 winter babies.

Elbeagle · 30/01/2020 12:13

With our January baby, DH had to go out and defrost the car in the car park before we could leave!

meandmylot · 30/01/2020 12:16

Exactly what you said op, but we didn't bother with mittens as hands covered by blanket/sleepsuit. The ward was about 30 degrees but they wanted the babies all layered up. Which does seem silly as obviously once we were home in our 24 degree house we ditched the hat, cardigan and blanket.

sadtoday21 · 30/01/2020 12:50

I am wondering the same thing for my baby due in mid-March. Was planning on short-sleeved vest, sleepsuit (with built in scratch mits and feet), and medium-weight cardigan, with blanket. Possibly in both newborn and 0-3 sizes?

Haven't bought a hat yet - what do I need? The thin, newborn ones that come in two packs or something a bit warmer?
