I can't seem to control my gestational diabetes.

Have been testing after every meal. And I just can't seem to control it. My readings are supposed to be 6-7 after a meal, but I am getting anything from 7-10.1 are they going to be pissed off with me? I am trying, but struggling. I have no sugar in my tea, use sweetner on my cereal (ones that the nurse said I could eat) Have used diet stuff and check the sugar content on everything. I don't want to have to go on insulin.

well, just 4 weeks ago, DS2's tummy measure was on the 9th precentile, with his head on the 50th. So am not too worried tbh

what really gets to me, is that I am trying so hard, and my mum, who was diagnosed about 3 years ago with type 2, just eats what she like, because she doesn't really understand how to control it. Her readings are 12+ in the morning, she pops a tablet and then it slowly goes down during the day, but even her last readings are too high. She doesn't seem to understand that she needs to control it. As soon as she comes home from her break, I am going to pounce on her and make her understand.

Well that was confusing!!! saw the midwife, then met the consultant and someone else and then the dietitian. The midwife and the dietitian were lovely and the consultant was great, but the other doctor? was a bit offish! Anyway they have said that if I have 3 more days of high numbers I have to start on Insulin. am so so thrilled!!!!

Did they reassure you in any way that insulin isn't the end of the world?
and did you get a diet plan? or the answer to the great potato debate??
so many questions!

pepperrabbit · 03/09/2007 16:18

and (must think through posts before posting them..)
did they confirm to test one hour after eating?? That's what's puzzling me.

sparklygothkat · 03/09/2007 18:18

Have a meal planner, which is helpful. They didn't explain much about the insulin TBH. They said that roast pototoes are ok, as long as they are peeled, cooked and roasted by my fair hands and not shop brought (I hate the shop brought ones anyway) I have to go back in 2 weeks for anoter checkup, but if I have 3 more days of high numbers I must phone the nurse and she will tell me about the insulin.

They said that the 1 hour testing is more accutate (sp?) for pregnancy.

Sugar that sends your blood sugar high is not only normal sugar - lactose ie the natural sugar in milk, and fructose, the natural sugar in fruit also spike your blood sugar level.

I would avoid fruit and milk, also potatoes. Nothing made from white flour, only wholemeal bread and wholemeal pasta, brown rice. try to eat protein at each meal.

Good luck!

sparklygothkat - I'm gald you came away with something positive. At least with a meal planner you know you'll be doing everything you can to keep things under control. I'll keep everything crossed for you

sparklygothkat · 03/09/2007 20:05

tonight's evening meal reading was 6.4 I am happy with that!! The doctor said that she is not as strict with the readings, and has given me more leeway on the readings, less than 6 for the morning one, and less than 7.5 for the rest

pepperrabbit · 03/09/2007 21:40

I'm so pleased! you may escape the insulin yet. well done.
bah humbug to the 1 hour testing though

sparklygothkat · 04/09/2007 10:04

woohoooo!! Breakfast was 1 weetabix (as per the dietitian's instructions) and it was 6.1, had some toast about 1/2 hour ago, as I was still hungry.

sparklygothkat · 04/09/2007 10:21

I don't want to start on the insulin, so really hope I can do this... Today has been less stressful anyway, as the kids are back at school wooohooo

sparklygothkat · 04/09/2007 22:42

Lunchtime one was 4.6 but the dinner one was 7.8, so slightly high, not sure if that will be a problem?

useful starting point for working out what and how to eat whilst pregnant with glucose intolerance

Hope this works OK

sparklygothkat · 04/09/2007 23:06

Thanks EW, have quickly read through that

pepperrabbit, I did notice other woman eating junk in the clinic yesterday, I couldn't believe it!

sparkly - if sugar gets too low it triggers the body to release more sugar (your liver does it) I've had a couple of very low readings followed by a very high one as a result of eating at the same time as the rebalancing is kicking in. I don't think it's a huge problem but I'm trying to snack a little to keep even.

sparklygothkat · 06/09/2007 19:57

felt terrible today, went all faint and dizzy. My blood sugars dropped to 4. I am not sure if it was all down to the sugars or something else

OP posts:
iris66 · 06/09/2007 20:26

It could be if your body's not used to it. Mine have gone down to 3.2 twice now but I don't seem to feel it (which is very worrying) I get really hungry when my sugar's on the way down as it hits around 5.5 for some strange reason.

Make sure you're not starving yourself!!

sparklygothkat · 06/09/2007 20:33

I tried to phone the diabetes specialist nurse, she is out of the office till the 20th, so tried to phone the number that was on the answer phone and that lady is also out of the office till the 12th!! I have no idea if I should worry or not

OP posts:
iris66 · 06/09/2007 20:38

did you feel better after you'd eaten?

sparklygothkat · 06/09/2007 20:40

yes. Dinner wasn't even late today

Had you been busier than normal (or emotional)? Both can have an effect. There's bound to be some kind of assessment unit at the hospital that could help during the day (where you went for your GTT perhaps?)but i suppose there's not alot you can do in the evening (bar NHS direct). If your sugar is back up & you feel better I'd be inclined to think the two are linked and the mystery solved. If you still feel unwell then maybe it's something else and you should get some professional advice.
