NT results: Help! High risk downs and low Papp-A?

Hey guys. I’m really worried.

I had my NT results back and I’m at high risk of Down’s syndrome (1 in 53).
Maybe I’m reading it wrong but i think the NT fluid is fine?

My Papp-a is really low, and since I found out I’ve googled it (worst thing) and now I fear I’m going to miscarry.

The hosp has put me on low dosage aspirin and will give me more scans between 20-26 weeks to monitor growth.

How worried shall I be? I’m not sure if the rest of the report is ok?
Is the CRL normal? Is the HCG normal?
I literally walked out of the hospital crying so wasn’t in the right frame of mind to ask questions but not I can’t stop thinking about it and thinking the worst.

Has this happened to anyone else? Was it ok?

Xx

Hello, try not to worry. I too got told I had Low Papp-A, immediately Googled it and then got really upset.

It's believed that the high risk downs result comes directly from the Low Papp-A but they will explain more about this with you at your next appointment.

I'm now 33 weeks and have realised it's not something to worry or stress about. You'll be under consultant care as they'll just want to offer you extra growth scans, as the main thing with Low Papp-A can be a smaller baby - but it's completely different for everyone.

There's a fantastic closed group on Facebook I would definitely recommend you joining and you'll see how 99.9% of the ladies on there who have Low PappA have had no complications or issues in pregnancy and have gone on to have healthy babies.

The group is Low Papp A Pregnancy Support Group.

Please try not to worry, if anything you get extra scans which means more opportunities to see baby and know everything is okay.

I had these same results 12 years ago, although I think mine where 1:50 !
She's upstairs listening to Jane Eyre on audible Grin. I was kept under special care unit at Bham Womens, I was 39 and declined further tests.

I did have placenta accreta ( where the placenta needs to be removed as it's knitted in) and I remember reading an academic paper ( maybe John Hopkins?) into research looking at correlation between low papa A and placenta accreta.

Please don't google anymore - you will scare yourself to death. Wishing you best of luck Flowers and many congratulations

I had this before Christmas at my 12 week scan. Higher risk than you at 1 in 13. I went into full on panic mode and googled non stop. My papp-a is slightly higher at 0.37, the other hormone much higher at 2.0 and nt about the same. My age related risk was 1 in 127. We decided to have the nipt test done which gave us a highly unlikely result for all three trisonomies. We needed to have that for peace of mind. The medical staff we spoke to were all very reassuring actually that a low nt value is very positive. I'm too on aspirin, 150mg and at the 20 week scan growth is on track. I will be having growth scans and meet with the consultant on Friday. It's ultra scary at the time but I've read so many positive stories that I feel much more reassured now. At the time it came as a massive shock.

I didn't know about the fb group so will certainly check that out. Thank you.

essexanon · 29/01/2020 22:18

Thanks guys. I feel like everything on the test isn’t normal, probably because I don’t really know what I’m reading and google has just given me anxiety.

I will defo check out the Facebook group. Thank you xx

Hi op, I've not experienced this myself but know 2 people who were told baby was going to be down syndrome and the other was going to be a dwarf. The one who was told her baby would be down syndrome I now work with the man and he definitely isn't. The one who was told baby would be a dwarf he is my 6ft 4in brother in law. I guess what I'm trying to say is they're not always right with these things so try not to worry x

@essexanon have they given you a number to talk to about it? My very high hcg and slightly low papp a combined with me being an older mum (though at 39 I don't class myself as that old!) put me in the very high risk group. When I actually spoke to someone about it they said that it's just based on averages. They stick all the figures into a computer and churn out a risk factor. A normal nt result is very positive. When our 'highly unlikely' nipt result came back the sonographer said, it's just the papp a then. So now it's a waiting game I guess. We have a doppler scan on Tuesday to look at blood flow through the cord. Fingers crossed that's low resistance. Will let you know how I get on and what the consultant says tomorrow. That will hopefully give me more answers x

1 in 53 doesn’t sound very high to me at all. Sometimes I think the numbers make things more, not less scary.

SleeplessinEastSussex · 30/01/2020 06:59

I had low Pap A last year and they put me on aspirin daily and monthly grow scans. DD is currently 4.5 months old and feeding from me.
I know it's hard but don't google it as it makes you worry more xx

ty12 · 30/01/2020 07:10

I had very similar results with both of mine and was a bit worried after looking on google. I had the nipt test and was consultant led, had growth scans towards the end and they were both fine, they are 3&5 now. I know its hard not to worry.

essexanon · 30/01/2020 08:22

Thanks all, im not necessarily worried about the high chance of Downs, we will have the baby anyway,

im more worried because of my low Papp-A. Im worried im going to miscarry because of this.

im also worried because I don't know if my HCG, NT Fluid and CRL is ok or abnormal also.

Pregnancy has given me the most anxiety (oh and google)

xx

Now that the initial shock has gone I'd spend some time writing down all of your questions and concerns then ring the midwife/sonographer and speak to them. We will only be able to talk about our experiences and everyone of course is different. Hopefully talking to someone who can discuss your results with you will help to answer the questions that you have.

fool11 · 30/01/2020 09:28

You can ask nhs to do a NIPT or safe test ( diff name in diff hospitals)if you are worried, they should be able to do it for free if you are a high risk, just a blood test, non invasive..but check with them..or you can have it done privately but a bit expensive ..

Roobles79 · 18/02/2020 11:23

Hello, after a bit of advice. I'm really worried getting results tomorrow or thurs from nipt test. I'm 36 first ivf baby, 15 weeks, been told high risk for downs 1 in 89 chance, Low papp a 0.39 hcg bit high 1.42 I think and NT was 2.5. It worries you sick when they say high risk and they don't offer you any reassurance. They said it's likely my age too. I don't know what we would do if it came back positive, my husband's had stage 4 bowel cancer so more bad news just knocks me sideways and I don't think we could cope emotionally. I've told people at work about the pregnancy stupidly and now worry that should the results be bad I've got myself into a right pickle. X

Morning all, so it's been a while since I posted on here and just found it again. Hope everyone is surviving through caronavirus? Just to update you I'm 31 weeks now. All seems to be going OK. The doppler scans have come back normal and growth appears to be on track (although on the slightly smaller side). Next growth scan is in 3 weeks time. Would love to hear how you're all getting on.
