So ive just got my 12 week scan letter and there is another appointment attached for the following week, my midwife thinks its to see the Consultant.
My question is what happens at your first appointment? Im assuming ive been refered due to high BMI and high blood pressure. Slightly nervous as not sure what to expect and never had this with my first pregnancy.
Anybody share their experiences? X

I had mine yesterday, although for different reasons (IVF baby, previous C section and previous small baby!!). Was there about 2 hours but quite a lot of that was waiting. Did blood pressure, wee sample and bloods (although that was because one test had been missed previously). Then saw the consultant and just had a chat about all the reasons I was there. Then an action plan agreed, in my case, extra scans (32 and 36 weeks) and extra midwife monitoring. Chatted c section pros and cons and agreed again. Then just sent away with dates and forms. All very relaxed, and to be honest nice to know I’m being kept a close eye on. Will have another consultant appointment at 32 weeks, I guess another chat/plan of action xx

I am consultant led (for diabetes) and have an appointment every 4 Weeks, with extra growth scans every 4 weeks. It’s fine, they are very supportive not judgemental at all. I am a very anxious patient and they make me feel comfortable. The extra attention might even be a positive.

I have a consultant led pregnancy due to previous baby being diagnosed with T18. I saw her after I lost the baby and now she is leading this pregnancy. I was very disappointed with my appointment yesterday, midwife booked it on my behalf and turned out I didn't need to see her until the combined screening in a few weeks time.

I'm now 37+5 and consultant led for blood pressure. Fortunately it's white coat hypertension so haven't needed any medication. I haven't seen my community midwife since the booking appointment as they are all up at the hospital on the day the hypertension clinic is held so one of the consultants is there in case something crops up at a midwife appointment. I had a few extra appointments at the start and was prescribed aspirin but no extra scans. We've discussed expectant management today so looking at a sweep next week (38+5) and induction round about 40 weeks to keep risks to a minimum

I’m consultant led for a neuromuscular disease and high BMI. I saw a consultant before my 16 week midwife appointment where she just asked questions and explained what consultant led would look like for me (can vary depending on your nhs trust and why you’ve been referred). I didn’t see them again until 28 weeks.

BMI will trigger growth scans as the belly measure with a tape measure is less accurate with an increased BMI. I had a growth scan at 28 weeks followed by the consultant appointment after. I have this every 4 weeks (my 32 weeks one is tomorrow). I’m usually there 2-3 hours but my consultant appointment always takes longer because of my disease.

So nothing to worry about :) they will probably refer you for a GTT at around 26 weeks (BMI is a trigger), which my midwife organised, and may put you on aspirin as a precaution. And you need urine at every consultant appointment. Other than that I see it as a good excuse to see baby more!

I had my first consultant appt a few weeks ago and as others have said, they just talk about the need for additional scans/appts, expectations around birth (I will be induced just before my due date as they don’t want me to go over), things like that. I’m consultant led due to age and IVF baby so there’s a concern baby will be small (not that he feels small even now!)

I'm consultant lead due to severe hyperemesis so had extra scans and appointments but I love it as I've gotten to see my little bub a lot on the scans which is always lovely.

Im consultant lead due to problems with my first delivery, she had shoulder dystocia and i had pph following birth. Ive only seen my consultant once at 20weeks, will see him again at 36 weeks to book for csection 😀

I would try not to worry, the consultants will take extra care of you x
