Can you develop gestational diabetes after 27 weeks

Hello, I got the GTT test done when I was 27 weeks and I got the all clear so I don't have it, but I was wondering can you develop it after you get the all clear??

Yes you can, I'm afraid at any stage. I was diagnosed at 28 weeks last time and at 6 this time, on medication by 7 weeks. Hopefully you don't!

Jaydemeehan33 · 29/01/2020 13:45

Really? Why do they only test you once then😨

I believe it's most common at around that stage. I recognised the symptoms this time around but I believe midwives do also test urine for sugars routinely so can suggest another test if it looks likely later on. It's not massively common so I suspect to keep NHS cost down.

LiveFatsDieYoGnu · 29/01/2020 14:25

Some areas don't do a routine GTT at all - I haven't had one because I don't have any risk factors for GD. My midwife dips my urine to test for glucose at each appointment and would refer me for the GTT at any time if she thought my risk had increased, so I imagine you will be monitored similarly.

Jaydemeehan33 · 29/01/2020 15:23

Oh yeah she does test my urine regularly so I suppose that would tell if I needed another test, thanks guys :)

Yes you can. If you have any family history of diabetes they should be checking regularly too. IIRC I developed it around the 30 week mark, though as the MW had ignored my family history and hadn't checked my bloods, I may have had it earlier.

If you have any symptoms, or your bump suddenly seems to get a lot bigger, ask for GTT.

SilverOtter · 29/01/2020 15:55

GD is progressive, so your insulin resistance tends to get worse as pregnancy goes on.

Obviously don't overly worry, but keep an eye out for symptoms such as excess thirst, weeing a lot or feeling ill after eating (I thought I was having low blood sugar attacks during my pregnancy because I kept feeling nauseous, dizzy and weird but it was actually high blood sugar!Confused)

Jaydemeehan33 · 29/01/2020 21:02

Okay thanks guys, I always need to pee but I've had this since the day I found out I was pregnant lol, thanks for the replies 💕

I was diagnosed at about 35 weeks. I passed the GTT but the baby was big and so they got me to start testing my bloods after eating. And my blood sugars were high so I had to manage through diet for the final few weeks of my pregnancy

Rubyroost · 29/01/2020 21:28

@Limplettice can I ask if there was glucose in urine. Last pregnancy there was glucose in my urine but no diabetes. This time I'm being tested because I have a huge baby. I'm awaiting resukts but had no glucise in urine. I've asked quite a bit as baby measuring large sibceb20 weeks and now getting evn bigger. Finally at 32 weeks they've decided to test despite my repeated requests.

Rubyroost · 29/01/2020 21:29

@Gastonimo so you can pass the test and still have it? I've got a blood sugar monitor somewhere I bought it last time round and never used it. I might start testing

Jaydemeehan33 · 30/01/2020 00:18

Oh no way! So a baby that measures big can be an indicator? My baby is weighing bang on how many weeks I am x

OP posts:
Rubyroost · 30/01/2020 01:05

Yes because of the uncontrolled sugar levels. This passes on to baby and leads to ore fat round baby 😭

LimpLettice · 30/01/2020 06:47

@Rubyroost I hadn't had any urine tests when I was diagnosed this time. I just knew so my previous diabetic team (DS is only 15 months) told me to start testing and lo and behold levels were up.

Last pregnancy I was tested at over 40 with Type 2 in the family. My first pregnancy ten years ago I was never tested but now we think probably undiagnosed as I had polyhydramnios. A big baby can very much be an indicator as can a relatively large stomach measurement on the baby. If you have a monitor it's worth keeping an eye I think.

Gastonimo · 30/01/2020 06:55

I was ready consultant led due to previous thyroid condition so I was having additional scans which is why baby they noticed baby was measuring big. Bump measurements were bang on the line though. It was a different consultant I saw every time so I had to keep explaining I'd had the GTT. I was low risk for it so wouldn't have had the test routinely. Eventually one consultant just said she wanted me to monitor my bloods after eating for 2 weeks. A nurse phoned and went through results and told me how to manage with diet.
Anyway I got quite fixated on this giant baby and ended up being induced a week early. He wasn't big. He was 7lb7 which was about 2lb lighter than they'd said.
My sugars definitely spiked after eating but I didnt seem to suffer any adverse effects from GD. But the ladder of intervention as they call it did lead to induction which may not have been necessary.
If you're worried speak to your midwife x

Rubyroost · 30/01/2020 13:29

Thanks both for sharing. Im having extra growth scans because I'm over 40, everyone is saying everythibg is fine despite baby being over 6lb at 32 weeks! 😭 I'm just so worried and anxious about all sorts of stuff. So I'm having a private scan with consuktant. Everyone says they don't worry about big babies, but I've got all sorts going on in my mind like fetal abnormalities etc. I have increased fluid too, but not polyhydriamnos (yet)..

No results from hospital yet, they said of they don't ring i haven't got it. But I'm going to ring tomorrow even if I don't hear anything

Pollaidh · 30/01/2020 13:29

Large bump can be either baby getting too much sugar, from the mother's GD, or can be polyhydramnios (excess amniotic fluid) can also caused by the mother with GD having uncontrolled sugars (baby wees more and produces more amniotic fluid).

Due to the fact my GD wasn't picked up early enough, it progressed to polyhydramnios, which risks cord prolapse, perinatal death, prem birth and placental abruption, so to avoid this DS had to come out early via a c-sec. It was noticeable because my bump went from pretty compact to massive very quickly. In my case DS was over 4kg at only 37 weeks! So glad they got him out early or in another 3-5 weeks I'd have been pushing out a small elephant.

Rubyroost · 30/01/2020 13:32

I have a large bump but also large baby according to scans. Not polyhydriamnos as yet- increased fluid. So I'm hoping it doesn't develop to polyhydriamnos. The consuktant never even mentioned the increased fluid. I read it on my notes after the appt and ended up googling and reading loads of scary shit. 😭

Rubyroost · 31/01/2020 09:16

@Gastonimo so I'm still awaiting results. Do you remember what your levels are. Mine was 8.5 after eating and 6.5 before (this morning when I woke. Apparently 7.8 and 5.5 are the cut off for what it is supposed to be. I'm just wondering how bad that is?!

LimpLettice · 31/01/2020 11:31

Your levels are over @Rubyroost. I was testing in the 6's for fasting and over 8 post meals before I started the metformin, and that was with eating GD friendly. My limits are 5.3 fasting and 7.8 1 hour post meals, so not horrendous but too high. Some diet adjustment might do the trick at that level though.

Rubyroost · 31/01/2020 13:19

Thanks @LimpLettice yeah I know my levels are over. Crown Shock Anyway I've now had results fasting was 5.4 and sfter was 9.4. I'm hoping that's not too bad and easily controllable. Anyone any experience of this.

Rubyroost · 31/01/2020 13:22

Sorry @Jaydemeehan33 I've just realised I've totally hijacked your thread.

R2D2abc · 13/02/2020 11:54

Sorry to jump on, saw your messages and taught to learn some tricks from you until I get tested again.

I suspected GD since this week, but had symptoms since after my OGTT( which came clear, but had my toddler with me which meant moving quite a bit there).

My symptoms are extreme tiredness, especially after meals, feeling dizzy also after eating with nausea sometimes. Also my vision worsened( which usually happens in all my pregnancies but never had GD). Another thing that made me wonder was that I started to be extremely thirsty to the point I'm having 5 litres of water a day and still feel thirty. My baby measured 2 weeks ahead at my 28 weeks growth scan( especially belly being over 95), where at the 21 weeks he was measuring under 50 percentile. And I do have big babies.

Just been ignored each week at the midwife appointment where I stated different symptoms and also consultant said I'm fine. But just didn't feel ok.

Tested my BG this morning, fasting was 5.1, after meal 8.5, and I had what I always eat in the morning.

Booked for another OGTT in two weeks but I guess I'll continue to monitor my BG and see what foods triggers it. I hope it doesn't affect baby as far as I keep my levels down and get l get my OGTT.

It's itching a symptom also?
