I'm 27+5 and looking for some advice... I went out for dinner last night and on a whim ordered a medium rare steak. I'm now regretting this having read more about toxoplasmosis.

Has anyone else asked for a blood test from their GP after placing the self at risk of toxoplasmosis, and if so what was the response?

I know the risks are low as it was a one off, but I've read on the Tommy's website that if I have contracted the infection antibiotics can be given to reduce chance of it transmitting to baby.

I’ve also been really paranoid about toxoplasmosis - I ate a rare burger in my first trimester and also have a cat! I told my midwife about my concerns and she was really understanding and offered me a blood test to put my mind at rest. I think that was at 16 weeks and it came back clear. I mentioned at my last appointment that I’d like another one and she’s given me a form to go to the local clinic and get tested again next week. I’ll be 27 weeks at that stage.

Please remember though that contracting toxoplasmosis is very rare (I think the chance is something like 1 in 10,000!) It’s definitely worth speaking to your midwife though if you have any concerns - the testing has really helped to put my mind at rest.

Thanks that is really reassuring, I will mention it at my next appointment.

I read on a thread the other day that someone's doctor told them they'd only seen diet cause issues in pregnancy twice in his whole career and both times it was women eating homemade unpasteurised cheese. I also think of all the undercooked meat and range of cheeses that women in other countries etc will doubtless be eating. My friend went to Spain and they were gobsmacked that she was concerned about things like cured meat, cheese. That all put my mind at rest!
