Issues with antenatal appointments

Hi all, I just recently found out I'm pregnant, due to issues with the baby's father (violent/threatening and generally being a bit of moron) I've had to inform work earlier than I would have liked too, we are a small business, with only four members of staff and mostly lone working. My manager and my director are being extremely aggressive when I'm asking to sort out risk assessments and things like midwife appointments. Our employee handbook states that appointments are paid included travel time and should not be made to be on your day off unless necessary, my manager and director are insisting I have all appointments on my day off to lessen the impact on the business... now I don't mind having some appointments on my days off but I don't think its completely fair to change my working hours and insist.
I have an upcoming app on Thursday, my first, my manager has told me on that day I will not be allowed lunch and I will have to use time in lieu for the allotted time as they don't want to have to close the store for an unnecessary appointment.
I'm trying my hardest to be reasonable with them as I know it will impact as we don't have a lot of staff but I have pointed out that in their employee handbook it states its paid and you can't use time in lieu towards it ? I've also tried to suggest working in one central store rather than across all three so I can cut down on traveling times to and from my appointments to help them, but they are insisting all my appointments must be on my days off, are they allowed to enforce it ?

Don't they realise that for most ante natal appointments, you don't get any choice of when they are? Unless things have changed drastically in the last ten years! And no, they should not be bullying you like this.

No there not by law you are entitled to paid time off for ante natal appointments and they are not allowed to force you to goon your days off my midwife only does her clinic on a Wednesday so all mine fall on that day u may find yours the same but you could ring citizens advice and they can advise you on how to proceed your employer should do a risk assessment and allow the time off not make you feel like you are doing x

Sounds like they are behaving very poorly. Is it part of a bigger company where you can speak to someone else? Are you in a union? Check the legal requirements, not just what is in the handbook and get things in writing from them (for example email to ask for the time off and get an email response) in case you have to take it further.

Join a union ASAP and contact maternity action. I can guarantee they will discriminate against you throughout your pregnancy and maternity leave so please get clued up as soon as.

Hi,

This is what’s on UK gov website
‘Pregnant employees' rights
Pregnant employees have 4 main legal rights:

paid time off for antenatal care
maternity leave
maternity pay or maternity allowance
protection against unfair treatment, discrimination or dismissal
‘Antenatal care’ is not just medical appointments - it can also include antenatal or parenting classes if they’ve been recommended by a doctor or midwife.

Employers cannot change a pregnant employee’s contract terms and conditions without agreement - if they do they are in breach of contract.

Employers must give pregnant employees time off for antenatal care and pay their normal rate for this time off. The father or pregnant woman’s partner has the right to unpaid time off work to go to 2 antenatal appointments. ‘

Pretty much self explanatory and you should show this to your employer x

Wow, sorry you are having to deal with this OP.
Your employer is bang out of order and behaving appallingly....You've had some great advice from PP which I would look at and go from there.

You don't even get to choose when a lot of appointments are, i had no say in when my dating scan is or my 1st consultants appointment.
