DRINKING IN PREGNANCY

i was just wondering how much ,if any, people drink alcohol. i know your not meant to drink any, but i have to admit that i love my wine, and have half a glass of wine, mixed with half a glass of lemonade, maybe every other night. Is this too much? Do all other mums stop completely?
Im also struggling with the caffiene thing, i had my son three yrs ago, and i was told not to drink it to excess, but now we have a limit. I love coffee, but just had to buy de-caff!

my mil is a consultant. she saw nothing wong with a few drnks whilst preggers. obviously in moderation - a couple of small glasses of wine a week is nothing to worry about. also, better to space them out over the week instead of 3 in one night.

however, i didn't drink at all for the first three mnths.

the choice is yours at the end of the day.

also, decaff is your friend...

i got migranes if i had caff whilst pg

Bouncingturtle · 01/09/2007 18:59

Didn't drink any at all during early pg, as I couldn't stomach it. But now I have the odd small measure of Bailey's Irish Cream, maybe 1 or twice a week (a birthday present I got in April, I may actually finish the bottle off before baby is born at Christmas!). I mentioned to my midwife and to the GP with whom I had my company medical, and they both said that was absolutely fine. The odd couple of glasses of wine will not do you any harm but having it as a spritzer is a good idea. The main danger with alcohol is that it dehydrates you - ethanol will absorb 4x times it's own weight in water. So make sure you keep your fluid levels up!

When I was pg with dd I had one can of guiness a week but when I was 24 weeks I fell and broke wrist and had to be operated on and the only pain releif I could have was paras! I was climbing walls and midwife said when I was discharged go home and have a large g&t!! I bought a minature and drank it and got some sleep but boy did i feel guilty

The second pg I had the one can guiness a week but i lost baby at 25 weeks (never got an explanation) so swore next time I would do everything right

I am now 27 weeks and i have had no alcohol.Saying that I am anaemic now and wonder if drinking the guiness last time assisted with this? Gonna check iron content on web now...

I think generally though although i am not a big drinker (agree that early mornings with kids change things, I used to love a sesh) just having one a week is not worth it.

I got a lovely bottle of chamagne for my 40th birthday in July and I intend to sup it at xmas!! (baby due 1st dec)

CHOCOLATEPEANUT · 01/09/2007 19:24

checked on guiness and its an old wifes tale!

Rhubarb · 01/09/2007 19:25

Guinness used to have a lot more iron in it than it does now. It was prescribed to pregnant Irish women by their doctors for the iron content.

CHOCOLATEPEANUT · 01/09/2007 19:27

Emzy5 · 01/09/2007 19:56

yup. tiredness is a good diet to b on i want chocolate...

Rhubarb · 01/09/2007 20:01

Steak good, spinach ok.
Take a vit C after eating iron rich foods as it helps you to absorb the iron. And refrain from drinking tea after a meal as this can interfere with the absorption of said iron.

Mine of info me!

just sent dh out for choc. yum yum.

ShellySara · 01/09/2007 20:30

Hi ladies,

I just wonder about what parents and grandparents and even those before them did. There were no recommendations out then by the health service. Surely if the health service were 100% correct, then a lot of us wouldnt be here already.

My doctor told me it was all personal choice on smoking as I told him I was trying to give up, and he said that if I cant then not to worry too much but try and get down to 7 a day.

I know my mama smoked and drank when she had me and my brother and to me, we are fine!

I aint sure on all these helath care suggestions - I know none of us want to willingly hurt our babies, but I still cant help thinking about what was happening 50/100/200/500/1000 + years ago when there wasnt even a proper health service.

that's true but the way i see it if something happened to your baby, god forbid, i would always think 'what if...' etc.

Rhubarb · 01/09/2007 20:36

I think there were more miscarriages back then, more infant deaths, more sickly babies.
