Hi, I am 15 weeks pregnant with an IVF baby and at my booking in appointment the midwife told me I would need to see the consultant because it was IVF? I didn’t understand that as felt once you were pregnant what’s the difference? Have my appointment on Tuesday and just wondered what to expect? Will I have regular appointments from now? Will there be extra scans? Any information appreciated xx

I'm currently 27 weeks with an ivf baby and they just keep a closer eye on you than normal, my consultant appointment was basically her saying we wont mess around when it gets to 40 weeks meaning he wont he staying in past that, I've also got a growth scan a week on monday because they tend to be smaller than naturally conceived babies it's honestly nothing to worry about and a huge relief that they keep such a close eye 😊 congratulations xx

I've had consultant appointments because of a combination of factors (IVF being one, but also I'm old and full of fibroids). It was explained to me that IVF is one factor that can be associated with the placenta doing less well if you go late - since being older is another factor, they have indicated they'd like to induce me at 39 weeks.

I have had extra scans but those were more to do with the fibroids, I think.

Oh that’s interesting thank you. Just couldn’t find a reason why it would be needed but that all make sense. This will be a c-section baby so think will be early/earlier than 40 weeks anyway. But my daughter (who wasn’t IVF) was on the smaller side so they may keep an eye on me if IVF babies are smaller x

My midwife felt all IVF pregnancies should be referred to a consultant, but the consultant I saw doesn't seem to agree and would have referred me back to the midwifery led service if that was my only risk factor. (I do have other factors so have remained consultant led.)

If you have no other risk factors than IVF, I think you may find that you can be midwifery-led if that is your preference.

@Mummyspider27 Congratulations on your pregnancy! Soo exciting!
I am IVF too and I think they like to keep an extra eye on us. You may get offered growth scans and you may also be offered induction at 40 weeks if you haven't had the baby. Good luck!

I was told I'll be consultant led, but the first appointment isn't until 20 weeks. Nothing was explained to me just that it IVF so that's what they do.
