Hello, am 33w plus having my first baby and early in the first trimester i had a laparotomy to correct my twisted bowels and remove a bursted appendix...i want to know if i have an option for a virginal birth or go straight for caesarian section.

I'd have thought you'd be better off talking to your health care professional about the options you'd be allowed- no one on Mumsnet can advise you of this as it varies on a case by case basis.

Hoping for related stories and testimonies😔

Ah, well I've got none of those, I'm afraid. Also, are you aware that it's vaginal, not virginal? I presumed it was a typo but then I noticed you'd made the same error truce on your other thread.

BecauseReasons · 25/01/2020 11:02

*twice. Why autocorrect would think I use the word truce more often is beyond me.

I think it's such a rare occurrence you won't get many related stories I'm afraid. Are you in the UK (as you refer to your surgeon and your gynaecologist separately)?

keyboardwarrior1 · 25/01/2020 11:06

Virginal birth quite difficult unless you are called Mary and have had a recent meet up with Gabriel Smile

You'd need to ask your doctor, of course, but I can tell you that I had a ruptured appendix / laparotomy early in my first pregnancy, and went on to have a normal vaginal delivery . My uterus was not involved in the surgery, so there was no reason for there to be any problem pushing a baby out. You're probably thinking of women who've had a previous c section - sometimes they have to have further c sections , because their uterus has scar tissue which can possibly tear during a normal delivery.

No, Nigeria...the surgeon did the laparotomy and later on i was assigned a gynaecologist...i av been researching and saw some related stories on mumsnet was hoping to get an update...dont want to make a last minute decision. Thanks though..

This is really helpful.....the surgeon explained the same. Perhaps the gynaecologist's concern and my mind playing tricks on me kept giving me the worries. Kept imagining my tummy tearing open because of the scar. Thanks

Hello !
Just came across your thread.
I'm a Nigerian mom too and I just had ovarian cystectomy 1 week ago. So I keep wondering how soon I can get pregnant and my chances of having a vaginal birth too.

Did you eventually have a vaginal birth ? because I'm sure you already had your baby.

I also have a mommy WhatsApp group that is totally fun for pregnant and breastfeeding moms

@Jharmie I've also had a laparotomie. I've never heard that it's an issue for vaginal delivery, but I'm only 10 weeks so may not know yet! Have you been referred to a consultant following your booking in appointment? If so I guess they would be the person to ask.

Hi @Jharmie - it's not the same surgery but I had to have a laparotomy at around 16 weeks in my first pregnancy to remove a large ovarian dermoid cyst (plus an ovary 😕). There was never a discussion that a VB would present a higher risk due to my surgery/scar (which was well healed by due date). I think as a previous poster said, the risks might occur with previous c sections due to scarring on the uterus.
I hope you can have a discussion with docs that gives you the information to make an informed choice.
