I'm 14 weeks and keep waking up on my back! Is this going to do any harm? I have EDS and keep waking up in pain lying on my sides.

Hi,

They say until after 16 weeks you shouldn't worry about sleeping on your back.

I'm 26 weeks and occasionally wake sleeping on my back. When I do, I change position. I heard a few doctors saying that if it would obstruct your arteries you will wake up anyway as you will feel unwell too, not only baby.

I remember anyways also later on in pregnancy ( this is my 4th) that you won't be comfortable sleeping on your back anyway as baby will press on your lungs.

I woke up on my back quite often in my second trimester and I woke up because I felt like I couldn't breath. As PP said you'll feel ill / can't breath if the baby the obstructing you're artery in your stomach. I just moved on to my side straight after. I used to put a pillow behind me to stop me rolling. You could always ask your midwife for ideas too

You're fine for now, you've a few more weeks before you have to start sleeping on your side. Try sleeping with a pillow against your back so if you roll on to your back then you'll stay tilted.

12 foot pregnancy pillow and loop it between your legs and right around you, will make you less inclined to roll as you will either end up cuddling it in front or leaning on it in back

I have an amazing Queen Rose maternity pillow from amazom which goes up your front, across like a pillow, and down your back. So supportive and comfy, and the back pillow helps so that if I do roll in my sleep I'm not completely flat.

I think Tommy's say not to worry if you wake up on your back, just go back on your side.

I know everyone else is saying you're too early days for it to matter, but I found it really helpful to 'practise' sleeping on my side from very early on and it has helped me now I'm in my third trimester because side sleeping feels normal and doesn't bother me as much as it used to!

@toomuchteaandcake I'm 39+1 and it's only thanks to this post that I've learned I've been using my pregnancy pillow all wrong. No wonder it's not worked for me!

The NHS advice recommends sleeping on your side from 28 weeks. No need to worry about it just yet

@Engard oh bless you! I hope you have a good sleep tonight! Though have to say I did find it a bit weird the first few nights.
