Heart shaped uterus

Hi everyone,

This is my first post Smile I’m currently 8 weeks pregnant (first pregnancy) and had an early scan today, purely for reassurance. A heartbeat was detected and the lady scanning said everything with the baby looked healthy. She said my womb looks ‘horn shaped/heart shaped.’ I asked if this could cause any complications and she said that uterus’s come in all different shapes and sizes, it shouldn’t be anything to worry about, but that I will be referred to a consultant following my 12 week scan as babies of a heart shaped womb can arrive early. I’ve since came home and (stupidly) Googled heart shaped womb which has thrown out nothing but horror stories and statistics of increased misscarriage and premature births. I’m so worried and feel like I can’t get excited about what should have been good news (seeing a heartbeat) I wish I would have asked more questions about the severity of it. Does anybody else have a heart shaped womb and have any reassurance to offer? Thanks x

Hi, I have a heart shaped uterus discovered when I was pregnant before my miscarriage. After all the scans and tests they offered me in past they still didnt tell me I had it only discovered as I said at scan. Because no doc has ever discussed it with my i googled (bad mistake) guessing i will know more when i see consultant x

I have that too and had no problems at all during pregnancy! DD born at full term via ELCS. There are a few threads on MN about heart shaped wombs (I googled myself silly as well) and all the outcomes were good. There's a big range of heart shapes and elsewhere on the internet you will usually find results on the worst cases. In very early pregnancy, there's a small risk of insufficient blood flow if the embryo implants exactly in the abnormal "heart" part of the uterus, however if there is already a heartbeat then you should be in the clear :)!

I had exactly that at a 6 week scan.

I told the midwives and they said they'd only check it at the 12 week scan as it doesn't cause early complications. Then - and at all my other scans- they said my womb looked fine.

But DD ended up transverse and delivered by CS, during which the surgeon commented that my womb was a slightly odd shape.

Apparently this wouldn't have had an impact on her being transverse, but I'm not sure.

Either way, she's now 3 weeks old, healthy and gorgeous so it doesn't really matter.

"You have a heart shaped uterus"
"Oh... Does that mean anything bad?"
"No, it's just pretty. Look!"

Myself and a gynaecologist.
Try not to stress it :)

Thanks so much for your replies - I'm definitely going to try and relax (and ban myself from googling any further!) xx

I have a heart shaped one too ,it was picked up on my last pregnancy with my twins. Absolutely no problems at all with all babies.

@Serp I just wondered how your pregnancy went? I know this is an old post but wondered if you minded sharing your experience? As someone in a similar position I'm interested in hearing how things were for other people xx

Hi, my pregnancy was healthy and I now have a 2 week old baby girl! At my 20 week scan, there was no sign of the 'heart shaped' womb. Good luck with your pregnancy!

I have a heart-shaped uterus also and my first DD was breech - her head got "stuck" there and couldn't move down. But she had zero health problems and was full term.

2nd DD was head down and full term.

I think this is a common shape and shouldn't be an issue.

Oops!! Posted too late. Congratulations

@Delphinium20 thank you!

Yes me too. Both my DCs were early ( 36 weeks and 38 weeks) but had no issues resulting from this. DS2 had talipes at birth but there was no suggestion this was because of my uterus shape.
