Hello, was just wondering if anyone else is pregnant or was and taking ptu for graves. There's not much information on over active thyroid and pregnancy I am under an endocrinologist but just want my pregnancy to go well can't help but feel worried.

@Mrs71 as long as you follow the guidance of your endocrinologist then you'll be fine. PTU is much safer for the baby than Carbimazole. All they need to do is make sure your levels stay within range and it'll all be ok. You may need extra scans to check baby's growth but apart from that it should be ok. I had Graves' Disease, I was diagnosed 5 years ago and had a Total Thyroidectomy last January, I'm now on just Levothyroxine and baby is doing well, I now have negative antibodies for Graves too. During pregnancy my levels are checked every month. I'm 19 weeks and will need extra scans to check growth at 30 and 36 weeks. Please try not to worry, which I fully understand is difficult with Graves. Best of luck xx

I was on PTU for the whole of my pregnancy @Mrs71 and I now have a healthy 6 week old DS. It is much safer than Carbimazole which can cause defects in the baby if taken in the first trimester and is safer than no meds at all - Graves and Hyperthyroidism increase the chances of miscarriage. They just need to do extra growth scans to make sure that the baby isn't developing a goitre and hypothyroidism. Make sure you have plenty of thyroid function tests (particularly in the first trimester) because pregnancy affects your thyroid - hyperthyroidism gets worse initially then gets better so you might need dose adjustments.

Good luck in your pregnancy :)

@beaglemum93 thank you. I have been having blood test every 4 weeks which is good. I'm only 8+5 at the moment. Glad your ds is here healthy x

@Hodge85 thank you, are you seeing and endocrinologist along side gynaecologist ? My endocrinologist sent a letter to my gp last week saying I need to be referred to antenatal endocrinology or something which she runs anyway. I was seeing her privately so need to be referred to the hospital now. Also been having blood tests every 4 weeks since I've found out. Also have a booking appointment with midwife next week so maybe I'll know more then too. xx
