Wet Wipes

Hi all,

We have our first baby due in just over a month and after doing some reading on here it looks like lots of people just go straight to water wipes rather than cotton wool and water. Was hoping aldi would make their water wipes obvious but are these their water wipes? And if not, is there any other brand that people would recommend? Thanks so much in advance!

The best ones I have found are the water wipes x

Cotton wool and water is better for delicate baby skin but wet wipes are more convenient. Maybe a pack of each and see which ones you and baby get on with. I was given a load of Johnson's wipes but had to stop using them and give the unused packs away as DS was allergic. We used pampers when on offer or Asda own brand

ItchySeveredFoot · 21/01/2020 17:11

We use the brand Water Wipes. All other wet wipes are horribly greasy. Both my dd's had horrible eczema as babies but neither of them had nappy rash or any other problems down there.

WombatStewForTea · 21/01/2020 17:20

I was wondering this OP. The packet makes it sound like it's the equivalent to water wipes but I don't know!

dementedpixie · 21/01/2020 17:23

I never used water wipes (they are a brand) but used sensitive wipes from a variety of shops

firstimemamma · 21/01/2020 17:30

All baby wet wipes are made of plastic and it's an unnecessary cost too - even the cheap ones add up. We started with cotton wool and warm water but from 2 months or so we used water wipes... then we found out about cheeky wipes (reusable wipes) and wish we'd used them from the start! Since swapping to them we've saved money and they're kinder to baby's skin. No extra work whatsoever, they just get chucked in with my daily washing.

Rubyroost · 21/01/2020 17:58

I used cotton wool wipes, big ones that remove make up from asda until baby was on proper food. I bought water wipes and used these for emergency. Cotton wool was cheaper and I didn't find it inconvenient at all. My baby had quite bad contact nappy rash as a newborn and water wipes do have a very small amount of chemical in them. There's other wipes that are fairly gentle and a bit cheaper such as reeces wipes. The pure huggies wipes etc have a lot of chemical in them. You really have to read the labels

blueskiesbrighteyes · 21/01/2020 18:00

Reusable wipes are much better. LO kept getting nappy rash and hasn't had it in six months since we switched to reusable. We use Cheeky Wipes which are great. It also works out way cheaper x

Bol87 · 21/01/2020 18:01

100% water wipes. The actual brand called water wipes. They are 99% water & then an essential oil. Cotton wool was such a faff! We used water wipes for about 6 weeks & then swapped to Aldi sensitive ones. We’ve been lucky but our DD has never reacted to any wipes, so we just swapped & changed between any brand of sensitive ones!

KHall84 · 21/01/2020 18:15

There is also a brand called aqua wipes which are new and are really good and organic and recyclable same cost as water wipes as well, am using a a mix 9f both of these this time round x

Clangus00 · 21/01/2020 18:17

Reusable wipes or water wipes.

SexlessBoulderBelly · 21/01/2020 18:18

The bloody midwife in my hospital told me off for not having wet wipes.

When changing the nappy we asked for some water to use the cotton wool with and she looked so confused and asked why we didn’t have wet wipes. I explained that all I’ve ever read is to use water and cotton wool on newborns and she gutted at me and told me that was silly and to just get unfragranced wet wipes.

I was mortified and really embarrassed that I looked so unprepared 🙃

ThePurpleMoose · 21/01/2020 18:29

Another vote for reusable Cheeky Wipes! We used cotton pads and water for the first few weeks of new baby fog, but the reusable ones are so much more effective than disposable wipes - often one will do where you might need 3-4 disposables, and they actually get poo off rather than smearing it around Grin

They're very little trouble to wash as you get a 'mucky box' for soaking with a mesh bag that hooks inside, so you just chuck the whole bag in and the wipes fall out in the wash - no need to touch them.

We do keep a pack of disposables in the changing bag for emergencies but you also get waterproof bags so you can take fresh wipes out with you and again the mucky bag has a mesh insert so you can put the whole thing in the wash.

katee90 · 21/01/2020 18:31

Cotton pads and water are best for baby to begin with, as are Water Wipes (albeit an expensive brand!). Those mamia wipes are really great from about 4-6 weeks

illjuststickabroomupmyarse · 21/01/2020 18:37

Or flannels/ reusable wipes - even better

bookish83 · 21/01/2020 18:42

Aldi have a new version of water wipes - they are in the same section as those (rather than special buys) in a white packet without a plastic lid.

They look good!

PawPatrolMakesMeDrink · 21/01/2020 18:44

Absolutely recommend cheeky wipes. DS is 2.5 and they’re still going strong. They seem indestructible

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 21/01/2020 19:18

my babies due in 2 months time and ive bought some Cheeky Wipes. I kind if think it'll be a faff to take them to hospital, so my plan is to buy one pack of water wipes for the hospital stay

I got given some johnsons wipes and im not planning to use them either

R2D2abc · 21/01/2020 19:19

Never used water wipes. The cost is unreasonable for me.

I think you can find Huggies pure are quite nice, not much chemicals. I went to cheaper wipes like ALDI and Lidl quite soon.

If you can wash with water I guess it's better but sometimes the normal wipes are easier. No brand in particular.

Jen306 · 21/01/2020 21:13

This might sound a silly question but with the reusable cheeky wipes do you have to wash them separately to avoid them contaminating the rest of your wash? Surely I can’t put them in with baby’s vests / sleepsuits if the wipes have been used for poo? Do they not risk staining the clothes?

sep30 · 21/01/2020 21:41

Fab, thank you so much everyone!!! 🤗🤗

ThePurpleMoose · 22/01/2020 01:49

@Jen306 no, you can wash them with other things - you soak them in the mucky box so the stains come out no problem. I just do them on 40° and sometimes set the machine for heavier soiling but not always.
