I’d love to know this too! I haven’t found anywhere round me where you can try stuff on

Owwlie · 20/01/2020 17:57

The only two places I’ve found maternity wear are H&M (and it’s usually a small collection) and Jojo Maman Bebe, and I live near Birmingham so have a fair few large shopping centres nearby.

Everywhere else seems to have not stock online, I have ordered from some stores, collected and tried on in store changing rooms and then returned anything that didn’t suit. Although check their policy first, at some stores (like dorothy perkins) you cant return maternity wear in store.

ShirleyPhallus · 20/01/2020 18:00

Seraphine and H&M with a maternity range stores (both on oxford street if you’re nearby)

The best one is top shop maternity though, they have a full store in oxford street too which is excellent

I’d find out sizes / styles that fit then go on eBay and buy used ones, you wear it for such a short period of time it doesn’t make sense to spend loads

The exceptions to this are maternity leggings and tights (jojo and seraphine both great) and maternity jeans (H&M best ones) as you’ll continue wearing these when the baby arrives

Can order online from new and get it delivered to store. Can then try in on the changing. My local peacocks has a section too.

bananamonkey · 20/01/2020 18:07

H&M and New Look are the only shops near me that have items in store, my Topshop used to but have stopped stocking it Sad. Oh and JoJos but that’s not really my style. ASOS have tonnes of brands so I ended up ordering loads from there to try on/send back.

Everest1 · 20/01/2020 19:00

Thanks i did a large boohoo order returning it all! Just done a new look order fingers crossed some bits are ok or il be living in pJsShock

Seraphine all the way.

You cant try it on as its online, but I find it good quality and it look decent. I got a few bits from ASOS and it was poor quality imo.

Ill be getting some nursing stuff from Seraphine too. Im really impressed by them

firstimemamma · 20/01/2020 19:04

Certain branches of new look have maternity clothing in their stores to try on. You could ring your local one to find out.

firstimemamma · 20/01/2020 19:07

Op I don't know if this is your style but I got a black figure hugging knee length skirt that went over my bump and wore it with non-maternity tops (I tied the tops above my bump and to the side with a hair band). I think it looked nice and showed off my bump well. Could still get use out of lots of my pre-pregnancy tops and t-shirts this way too.

Hercwasonaroll · 20/01/2020 19:09

Primark in the centre of Birmingham has a maternity section.

If you have £££ Seraphine stuff is lovely. EBay for second hand bits is pretty good.

I had some OK basics like vests from asos. The rest was a bit meh. Asos is good if you need a wedding outfit though.

Jessie9323 · 20/01/2020 19:10

I'm a fan of new look and ASOS stuff myself! I know you can't try it on but unfortunately where I am taller than average and have a large bust also I'm pretty used to not being able to get what I want in a shop.

Poppy2020 · 20/01/2020 20:03

Love New Look for tops! Got a load when I was around 16 weeks and they still fit well so I've got good use out of them. Good price too. For jeans I love Topshop especially the Jamie jeans and if you looking for leggings I would 100% recommend Love Leggings. Smile

Some good tips on here - I was about to post a similar question but then saw this brand new thread. Does anyone have any recommendations for “unfrumpy” Mat wear? Feels like a lot of it is quite floral and floaty and not my style. Can you dress in normal clothes if you are clever about styles?

Kanga83 · 20/01/2020 20:24

I lived in new look for both my pregnancies- it was the only place I found really comfy tops and jeggings and a couple of nice dresses all really reasonably priced

Ohyesyoudid · 20/01/2020 20:28

Where are you based op? I know that new look in Bristol have a small selection of maternity wear. I found that their jeans were the most flattering.
Like previous posters have said buy online, deliver to store and try on, I did that with Asda (all hideous Sad)
Dorothy Perkins was also quite good as was next.

fibeee · 20/01/2020 21:41

It really depends where you live. Many of the shops I went into in my city told me they only stocked their maternity range online. Topshop had a small section but it was really limited. In the end eBay was my best friend. I got lovely Seraphine dresses for the party season for dirt cheap and a pair of black Seraphine skinny jeans new with tags which I live in. I also bought M&S jumpers in size 20+ to get me and bump through the winter.

Lilice · 21/01/2020 06:42

@Everest1 some new look and h&m have sections in their shops. Im going to buy online this time. Online shops usually offer free delivery when you spend over a certain amount, and you get free returns. So ill order more and return what doesnt fit. I have my eyes on zara (jeans) and verbaudet.

@Bookiewook I feel your pain. I remember going in to Debenhams at about 16 weeks and crying because it was all so frumpy and ugly (hormones may have been at play, I grant you that). I realised that I’d never shop in Debenhams in normal life so why would i revert there when pregnant?

That’s why I really like top shop, it’s all their normal clothes just bump friendly. Also new look is similar. That said, I’m still in some of my pre-pregnancy stuff, sweatshirts are still fine, plus vest tops / layers from primark are fine too

Seraphine, Jojo etc are nice but they are VERY “Clapham mummy” style - sort of like Boden stuff

My one massive bit of advice is invest in decent bras now. You’ll keep wearing your own and then suddenly realise they’re rubbing / you’re spilling out the cups etc so factor that in

Bookiewook · 21/01/2020 07:13

Thanks so much @shirleyphallus and lol to clapham mummy style which I know well and is exactly what I’m trying to avoid :) I ordered some stuff from topshop in the sale and it was all quite tenty but I think I’m not big enough yet for it to fit properly. Think I’ll try and eke out the rest of the winter in high street stuff in a size up etc!

sadtoday21 · 21/01/2020 10:49

This is a really helpful thread, thank you!

Now that I'm nearly 33 weeks, I find my one pair of maternity jeans and wearing normal sweaters aren't really cutting it anymore! Does anyone know where I can find something to wear to work, like a black suit dress, that isn't as expensive as Seraphine? Is it easy to return Seraphine things if they don't fit? And do they really mean it when they say choose pre-pregnancy size or do you usually go up one?

PeterPeterson · 21/01/2020 11:04

@Hercwasonaroll where in Primark is the maternity section, I'm in Birmingham everyday and this would be a life saver but that store is huuuuuge!

sadtoday21 · 21/01/2020 11:28

Anyone know where I can find something like this: www.seraphine.com/en-gb/black-boucle-maternity-jacket.html

They are all sold out in my sizes, but I love the idea of a black blazer with ribbon tie.

Bookiewook · 21/01/2020 11:48

Happened to see this morning that Never Fully Dressed have done an insta story on wearing some of their normal styles when pregnant. The models looked suspiciously thin for pregnant ppl mind!

There was a nice black knit dress @sadtoday21 although doubt would be cheaper than Seraphine.
