Heparin injections in pregnancy

I have previously had pill related blood clots so as soon as I became pregnant I was put on daily heparin injections. My first haematology appointment is on Friday at 6 weeks for a viability scan. Just wondering what to expect during the pregnancy with this added complication like appointments or symptoms or anything else. Thanks

Hiya, afraid I can't add much but I'm in a similar boat. Blood tests show I have lupus anticoagulant so I'm on heparin every day for the full pregnancy. I'm 6 weeks now and will get registered with midwife's at start of February, then I'll get referred to an obstetrician so I'll be led by them not the midwife. I imagine we might be the same in that way?
I'm not sure if yours is same as mine but I think I'll just do more wee tests as I'm high risk for preclampsia and preterm delivery. So I'm guessing there's not too much bother with appointments at the start but it'll ramp up at the end.
If you find out me let me know as I'm still waiting for everything to come through!

I will let you know how I get on at my appointment on Friday and hopefully know a bit more.

I took heparin during my pregnancies (after having a DVT). There were no problems throughout the pregnancy. The only slight difficulty was that you can't have an epidural within 24 hours of your last heparin injection. This for me meant I was included early so they could manage it.

Good luck

Did you have to have extra appointments or checks or after the first one were you just left to normal pregnancy checks?

I have antiphospholipid syndrome so was on heparin for both pregnancies due to risk of blood clots. It meant a fair few extra appts and scans during the pregnancy, and horrible support stockings to wear. I did get used to the injections but they do get harder as your bump expands! I had to have a dr led birth rather than midwife/ pool/ homebirth, and was induced as labour didnt happen by day before due date (they didnt want me to go over even though all seemed well). Injections for 2 weeks post birth too. Apart from that all was normal i think.

Congrats and hope the pregnancy goes wellq

That's interesting @ButterAlwaysMelts I'm not on heparin but clexane and after reading this I've googled and it seems to be the same thing with regards to epidural. Nobody had told me this! Will be mentioning it to my midwife this week

Yes, second pregnancy and back on the injections.
I’m in the UK and it meant a few extra appointments with consultants, but not until 24+ weeks.
No epidural if you’ve taken your injection within 24 hours.
They said I could bleed heavily during birth, they wanted to induce me, I couldn’t go over due date etc they basically scared the sh*t out of me, and it was absolutely fine! I had a wonderful water birth, normal bleeding (had taken my injection 10 hours previously) and this time I’m having a home birth!

@TwinkleStars15 that's really awesome to hear! I'm a fan of medical intervention of necessary but I am really worried about getting pushed about and rushed. This is my first pregnancy, and probably my only one. We're thinking of having a doula which sounds like such a silly posh person thing to do, we're not posh but I really feel like I could do with having an experienced advocate in there with me at the sharp end.
