Shock I have never suffered with this before until now!

I think I have 1 small one, I’ve had it for a few weeks, doesn’t cause much discomfort but I don’t like the thought of it there! Google seems to tell me the creams just ease the pain and don’t make them disappear, is that true?

Do they just go away on their own? If so how long does it normally take?

make sure you’re drinking loads of water and don’t strain when you go to the loo so you can avoid them getting worse now OP - tends to be once you’ve got them they never really go away and they tend to get worse the more heavily pregnant you get! The creams do provide a lot of relief (I think the suppositories tend to be more effective for some people though)

I've managed to avoid them thus far and am eating dried prunes every day to keep some semblance of regularity. Might be something to try to stop them getting worse at least?

Boymummy3 · 19/01/2020 21:11

They will shrink and go if your using creams etc. But be warned its likely they may come back during birth I only had a small one and gave birth on Wednesday and I've now got several and they are painfull.

Sweetpea1989 · 19/01/2020 21:15

Should I use the creams then even if it’s not causing much grief to help get rid of it.

I feel my bums future looks bleak now after the replies Blush

They do ease a bit after birth( although during vaginal delivery they tend to become more pronounced). I have internal and external ones( sorry TMI) since my first born 11 years ago. They did worsen with each pregnancy. On baby number 4 now and I plan on surgery afterwards as mine are quite bad now.

Creams to help the swelling to go down a bit. I found wet wipes to clean well the area helps .
Also ice packs near your bottom, as close as you can, makes the swelling go down quite well.

Some people manage well after birth without needing any medical procedure.

I managed well since now, but with this pregnancy it's getting so much worse a d I know it's time to get some more help.

Congrats btw @Boymummy3 hope you’re feeling ok x

@sweetpea1989 I personally would use the creams yeah just to ease it/get rid even if you do end up with them again later on they may not be too bad. And thank you :)

AnxiousandExcited · 19/01/2020 21:23

Yes, I have pretty bad ones since my first birth, in my third regnancy and also thinking that surgery is going to be my choice afterwards. I believe that is the only way to get rid of them and it isn't major surgery so... but mine are bad, even between pregnancies (bleeding and generally irritating).

Sweetpea1989 · 19/01/2020 21:30

Oh wow I did not know surgery was the only option when they get severe.

Good luck with that ladies, hopefully in comparison to an embarrassing trip to the dentist!

I'm 39 weeks with my 2nd and this has been my worst pregnancy symptom. If anything I'm more regular than normal so I'm pretty sure it's just the weight of everything that's causing the issue.

I'm not in UK at the moment but once I've recovered from birth I think I'm going to look into laser rather than the traditional banding treatment. Seems to be a bit more successful and less painful.

Alarae · 19/01/2020 21:38

Ah they appeared for me a couple of weeks ago (now 35 weeks). One appeared externally and made sitting with my legs closed awful.

One day it must have just burst (TMI!) as had a lot of bright red blood when wiping for a day or so, and when I checked on it had definitely shrunk in size. Knew it wasn't anything sinister as the relief was immediate!

Still got a couple of little ones but they don't bother me.

They were definitely a symptom I wasn't anticipating!

For fun I called the biggun Emma. Emma Roid (yes I'm hilarious).

I got them in my first pregnancy, and post (Vaginal) birth they were quite bad. You can get a numbing cream on prescription which is amazing. And the otc creams aren't bad. Also taking arnica seemed to help. They did go away eventually but I've just had my second baby and they have come back albeit not quite as bad/painful this time.

badg3r · 19/01/2020 21:58

I have had them since my first pregnancy. While they don't go away entirely, most of the time I can't feel them, they just flare up every now and then! Anusol helps a lot when they flare up every couple of months.

RyvitaBrevis · 19/01/2020 22:59

You can also try (gently) pushing them back in. Sometimes it works.

bookish83 · 20/01/2020 09:40

I had an external one at about 25 weeks. Perhaps an inch sized lump. It was excruciating. I don't know how I managed to walk or sit down I was in the worst pain I've ever felt. I should have seen a doctor but I was mortified and relied on the chemist and google instead. After about 4 days of hell it suddenly burst in the night which eased the pain, along with a pop and a lot of blood!

Remained there and a bit bloody for several weeks.

It took several weeks of topical creams (the ones with lidocane and then anusol helped me but obviously check what is safe!) and witch hazel (applied this several times a day on a cotton pad compress for 15 mins) to shrink.

Mine came from a bout of constipation due to lack of fibre when I was at my worst for pregnancy sickness. Ever since I have eaten prunes or dates daily. Lactulose helped soften during this time as well. When my eating improved I felt this naturally helped.

It was awful so you have my sympathies. I haven't given birth yet so cannot say what will happen there but I strongly believe the consistent treatment I applied and avoiding being constipated were the solution.
