Elected C Section - when can they be confirmed?

Hi there

Does anyone know what week within your pregnancy can you discuss how you want to give birth?

I read online that c sections are sometimes decided at 36 weeks but this seems very close to due date!

Many thanks

Following with interest as I’m 22 weeks and waiting to have my date agreed too!

hauntedvagina · 16/01/2020 19:55

I told my midwife at 8 weeks I wanted a planned section and that was that!

Koo33 · 16/01/2020 20:22

I told my midwife I want an elective c-section at my 8 week appointment. She has said that will be fine but details won’t be decided until 34 weeks. Still a little nervous they will say it’s not possible when I get there

EstebanTheMagnificent · 16/01/2020 20:24

I got my date at 37 weeks, which is normal in my trust.

WitchitaMickey · 16/01/2020 21:43

I think it depends on your trust, my 1st I was given a date around 28 weeks and with this one I was given it at 12 weeks. They can be subject to change though depending on staff cover/emergencies etc, my 1st was changed the week before.

Mummylanie3 · 16/01/2020 21:50

My consultant said I could have one at 12 weeks said she would give my my date when I see her at 28 weeks which is next week

amazedmummy · 16/01/2020 21:52

I should have been given my date at 37 weeks but due to some disagreement with a consultant I found out at 38+2 that my section was at 39 weeks.

Igowl · 16/01/2020 23:09

I got told when I was 36+4 weeks that I was having it at 39weeks (tomorrow) 😬😬

BelleBox19 · 17/01/2020 10:32

I asked (pleaded) for an elective at my 8 week app, I'm now almost 16 weeks and I have a consultant appointment booked for may when I'll be 34 weeks, I'm assuming it'll be to book my section 😊. It is very scary when you think about how close it seems, especially when you're anxious about it all. I felt a lot better when when said to me outright that if I still want a section at 34 week app then they'll book it there and then x

Urkiddingright · 17/01/2020 11:11

I got my date at 36 weeks and he was born at 39+1. They don’t generally book it in till quite late.

Flygirl94 · 17/01/2020 11:16

Ive got my consultation at 36 weeks to tell them my decision and book it, had one at about 16 weeks where they went through pros and cons

Tableclothing · 17/01/2020 11:20

Can't remember exactly when section was agreed, maybe 25 weeks? - there wasn't much hurry to do so because they don't book dates more than 4 weeks ahead here.

And even when you're booked, it can be put back if they have too many emergencies or staffing problems.

Babyg1995 · 17/01/2020 12:54

I get my date at 34 weeks was the same the last time .

AbelMartinez · 17/01/2020 13:53

Thanks so much guys. I spoke to my midwife ad she said in principle its agreed. But i wont see the doc to conult until 24 weeks / viable pregnancy. Horrible to think still not viable!! But anyway good to put my mind at rest with your timelines

I got my date today - I'm 29 weeks. It's in ten more weeks! I said i wanted a csec at my booking in appointment. I had a consultant appointment just before Christmas to discuss, and the appointment today to get it booked in.

Jezzballs2000 · 17/01/2020 22:52

I went in for a chat with a midwife who tried to talk me out of it, but said theoretically I could book it in then and there (it was around 14 weeks). Almost to be polite I agreed to meet again at 22 weeks to discuss again. I’m going to firm this time in 3 weeks time!

So should I expect it to be about 39 weeks?

Tableclothing · 18/01/2020 10:19

For an otherwise healthy straightforward pregnancy, yes. The later the section is carried out, the more time the baby's lungs have to mature, and the risk of them needing SCBU care reduces. If you go into labour spontaneously before then you go to the hospital and they do you as EMCS.

strawberry2017 · 18/01/2020 10:41

I saw my consultant at 20 weeks where it was agreed. I was told I would be scanned at 32 and 36 weeks and a date would be agreed at 36 weeks

Jezzballs2000 · 18/01/2020 13:24

@Tableclothing thank you. Time to start really thinking about this!

LittleDoveLove · 21/01/2020 22:27

I made it clear at my booking app I wanted one and had to be 'counselled' by two people. They said they wouldn't refuse me just that I had to go through the procedure. I got my date at 32 weeks but it is usually 36 apparently but I knew before I was having one and had the anaesthetic review etc x

1Pinkfluffyelephant · 21/01/2020 22:51

I have a consultant appointment at 34 weeks then a scan at 38 but section will be booked for 38 weeks if needed which is cutting it fine. Unless they book it in at the 34 week and then cancel if not needed after the scan.

AbelMartinez · 22/01/2020 11:18

Just an update thati saw my midwife and told her i wanted a C section. She asked if i was scared of the pain, and i said i was more concerned about the risks of childbirth.. especially at my age (41). She said she would book in a councillor and i said with due respect Ive done a lot of research and have made my decision. She has booked me in to see doctor next week. She was very understanding and agreed straight away. Oh and that's at Paddington St Marys

I had my planned c section date given when I was 37 weeks that was to discuss the risk and sign paper work etc I then had it done was I was 39 + weeks.

I know the NHS doesn't like to do many c sections due to costs and they like to prompt Vaginal birth as opposed to c section.
I was lucky in that my first birth resulted in forceps getting cut and ending with a 3rd degree tear and as I knew my second would be my last I told them I didn't want to risk further damage to myself and that I would be having no more children so the risks that came with a c section were of no fear to me more than the fear of ending up with long term issues if I had had to go through another natural birth.

Good luck op don't be scared to stand up for yourself they will try and talk you out of it from what others have said

AbelMartinez · 22/01/2020 12:11

God poor you! Awful! It's stories like this that make me 100% certain to 1000% certain. And yes they do try to prevent people due to cost reasons, but it's way more expensive to fix up someone after the damage has been done!

I was told the gestation date I would have one before I conceived, that was confirmed when I had a scan with my consultant at ten weeks and formally booked in around 28 weeks.
