Heightened sense of smell driving me mad

Has anyone else dealt with this?

My partner and I recently moved house, we’ve just had new carpets put down and unfortunately there has also been a weird drainage smell in the downstairs bathroom (still waiting on someone to come check this out, pray for me that it is fixed ASAP Sad)

Since being pregnant I can literally smell EVERYTHING, to the point where I can’t stand being in the house at the moment because I can smell the new carpet and toilet so strongly that it makes me feel sick.

We put those scented domestos toilet blocks in to mask the smell, which it has but even the lemon scent of the toilet block knocks me ill.

I’ve tried different wax melts, candles, you name it but the strong smell has the same effect 😂

I almost threw up the other day because my partner sprayed a bit too much deodorant and the smell made me ill.

My sense of smell before pregnancy was terrible so I’m so not used to having a nose like a bloodhound!

I hated the smell of my hallway and bathroom in the 1st trimester. It was totally giving me the boke. I remember someone had put a thread on here about hating the smell of their house as well. Luckily it's passed and smells aren't bothering me the same now I'm in my 2nd trimester

I'm the exact same. Yesterday I had a mental breakdown because I smelt my partners cavity breath and every time he spoke or came near me I was gagging. We ended up in an argument as he said I made him feel crap about himself. It's not nice at all, I feel for you OP

I have a terrible sense of smell normally but when pregnant could smell my DH putting a spec of cinnamon in a chilli from across the room. Now although I accept cinnamon is a nice smell generally for some reason I cannot stand it in savoury dishes - it makes me heave. My DH was incredulous at my detective abilities. Sorry OP I’m not much help but it will revert back to normal eventually. Use it to get out of all the chores you can. Wink

It’s awful. The first 14/15 weeks were the worst. I held my breath everytime I opened the fridge, had to stop my OH drinking coffee as it was a huge sickness trigger, when he cooked tea, he had to open the back doors, shut the kitchen door & I went upstairs to our bedroom and hid!

It gets better in my experience.. I’m 31 weeks & while it’s def still a bit heightened, nowhere near as bad! I can now cope with most smells, I just notice smells more than most people. I can smell a cucumber in a sandwich or salad a mile off.. which is quite bizarre!

Omg its driving my mad, I can constantly smell dog poo when I'm out for a walk! I'm holding my breath too opening the fridge and have to walk away if someone at work is drinking coffee next to me. Currently 10+2 so hoping it'll calm down soon!!

I can't have cut flowers in the house. They smell so bad, I can taste them.

Ibizababyy · 16/01/2020 21:21

I was exactly the same this time round until about 20 odd weeks! I could smell people’s sweat- like not BO but the minute a bead of sweat would appear I could smell it. I couldn’t open my fridge let alone cook. If someone had eaten garlic I couldn’t be in the same room as them and loads of peoples aftershave knocked me sick!! Best I could cope was to find nice fresh smells that really made me feel better so long as I was smelling them constantly- radox do a shower gel with eucalyptus in that was really fresh- is literally stand in the shower for ages inhaling it from my shower puff. I also got tangerine hand cream and I think it was grapefruit body mist from body shop which I would lather my hands in and sniff if there were unpleasant smells around. The spray I kept at my desk and constantly listed round myself!

We had to chuck out the Christmas tree early as I couldn't stand the smell. I thought that was pretty bad but then a few days ago a bastard fox started spraying in the side return, right by the back door to the living room Sad. Yesterday when I got home I had to wait outside the 20 minutes while we aired the house and DP cleaned it off with enzyme spray. It's revolting and I can't go in the living room at all.

FernBritanica · 16/01/2020 22:11

The citrus hand cream is s good idea. And yes to not being able to cook - I'm eating loads of ready meals just because I can't cope with the idea of standing in the kitchen with food smells wafting around.

mama3bear · 16/01/2020 22:20

Dab of vicks under your nose might help. I still have a really strong sense of smell and my dc are teenagers!!

KittyKatSmile · 16/01/2020 23:12

I threw up over Christmas because there was vegan cheese (not even really a thing IMO) in my fridge for when my little niece came to stay. I had to get my mum to remove it from my house and then tell my little niece there was no cheese for in her jacket potato Grin

b0nnieN · 17/01/2020 19:51

Oh god! I get nauseous at the smell of anything. I can't stand hand cream and the scented deodorant. There's time I can't even stand the smell of my 5 year old after he comes back from school 😩 ..

CoffeeBeansGalore · 17/01/2020 20:01

It was ripe bananas for me. If someone had a ripe banana in their house I could smell it as soon as they opened the door, & this lasted throughout pregnancy with all of them. First pregnancy, for the first few months I hated the smell of pizza. Last pregnancy I couldn't wear my favourite perfume as it smelt like ammonia! Lasted until baby was approx 12 weeks. And all three I craved small ice cubes & went off chocolate.

KatyButton · 17/01/2020 21:10

My in laws washing machine broke down mid cycle so they brought their washing round to mine to spin and I hung it out to dry before I took it back to them today and I cannot cope with the smell, the whole house stinks of their washing powder gag Weirdly the same thing happened last time I was pregnant too! (different washing powder) But at least it was summer then so I could stick it outside

Merename · 17/01/2020 21:13

For me it lasted quite a while post birth, did eventually settle down a bit but I think it’s some weird mum safety thing that happens to help you avoid dangers to your little ones.

Dollywilde · 17/01/2020 21:13

Every morning on my way to work I seem to be pressed up against someone who’s just had a cigarette. I’m 10 weeks and can’t remember the last commute I did not breathing through my mouth....

Thing is I had the occasional cigarette before pregnancy (not first thing admittedly but with a glass of wine etc) so it’s not even like I’m a lifelong anti smoker! But the smell is just making me Envy
