Hi guys had my 20 week scan and I was 20+5 found out I had a major low lying placenta covering baby’s exit I’ve been reading up on the possible outcomes of it does not move and would rather hear some real stories from people :) I’ve had a previous c section and was told at my scan that my placenta has not attached to my uterine scar so defiantly has a chance to move up. I’m genuinely unlucky and I just feel it won’t lol so questions... did yours move up? If so when? Did it stay where it was? Did you have any symptoms like bleeding? Have any stays in hospital? Also with a low placenta did you find kicks were lighter felt lower down? Or any other symptoms you think are related to have a low lying placenta.

I bled before diagnosis but by following the "rules" ie no strenuous activity, lifting, bending, sex, I managed to avoid any bleeds afterwards. Had a scan at 32 weeks and it had moved out of the way.

I had a low lying placenta. Didn't move at all so ended up having a planned c section (which was all fine). They did tell me that I was unlucky and the vast majority move out of the way. Good luck!

I had grade 4 or complete placenta previa. Mine was attached at the back so had pretty much zero chance of moving. I followed all the rules and had no bleeds or hospital stays.

I lost more blood in theatre than usual but it was my 3rd section. Lost 1.5l and got back 850ml of my own blood using a process called cell saver.

If your placenta is a lower grade and attached more to the front then as your bump grows it can move up but as mine was at the back there was no movement there to shift it.

I'm 33 weeks and had a scan on Monday to see whether my placenta had moved as I also had been diagnosed at my 20 week scan that showed the placenta was partially covering.
The scan on Monday showed still low, only 1cm away and their guidelines are at least 2cm otherwise it'll be a c-section.

I have an appointment with the consultant tomorrow to discuss and a further scan booked at 36 weeks to see if any change. I doubt it will have but no harm in checking again.

If it hasn't moved I have been advised I will have a c section at 39 weeks. Absolutely terrified of basically anything medical related and couldn't be further from my first birth which was a water birth with only gas and air!

So far (crosses fingers, touches wood) I haven't had any bleeding or other cause for concern. I did put a ban on sex after the 20 week scan, much to my husbands dismay seeing as I wasn't advised to do this, but from what I read online I thought it was too much of a risk...glad I did as the chances were that the placenta would have moved but no such luck Confused

Thanks guys for all your responses :) hoping mine will move... having a csection looking after a toddler and a new born wouldn’t be much fun at all, although I’d much prefer a planned one rather than a emergency like I did with my first! @cookiemonster5 do they put it in your notes with it is at the back or the front? She wrote that mine is major which I have read online that it’s covering the whole exit would I be right in thinking mine is right smack bang in the middle and neither at the back or front? Lol

That sounds exactly like mine was. Had my section on Tuesday and lost just a litre of blood. No bleeds throughout although I was on total pelvic rest to minimise the risks of a bleed. Was told at 20 week scan that chances of mine moving was nil due to position.

Firsttimemama2017 · 16/01/2020 19:58

I had a low lying placenta completely covering the exit at 20 weeks. Was rescanned at 36, 38, 39 and 40 weeks and it had moved but not far enough to remove the risks. I ended up having a planned c-section at 40+1. I had no bleeds at all but did loose quite a lot of blood during my c-section. Try not to worry as everyone I spoke to at the hospital told me they nearly always move by 36 weeks, I was just unlucky!
Pregnant again now and was pleased to hear at 20 week scan that placenta is not covering this time Smile

20-week scan showed up an anterior low-lying placenta for me - v close to but not covering the OS. Was exactly the same at the 30-week scan, it hadn't moved at all. But at 32 weeks it had suddenly moved a bit, and they're expecting it to have moved much more by 36 weeks. It's when the lower segment of the uterus stretches that anterior low placentas move, they said. That's also when we're particularly at risk of bleeds. So far I've managed to avoid a bleed by sticking v much to the prescribed pelvic rest (fingers crossed I can make it till 38 weeks...) Good luck, hope you'll be fine.

I had a low lying placenta with my first, a long time ago! I had more scans than in a completely run of the mill pregnancy. It moved and all was fine.

cookiemonster5 · 16/01/2020 21:04

A placenta is massive so it won't just be in the middle it will be protruding in some direction. It should say on your notes. Mine wasn't on my scar but started just below it.

Mistymeow · 16/01/2020 21:07

I also was told my placenta was low lying at the 20 week scan. I’d had a small bleed at 17 weeks so it wasn’t too much of a shock. It was 1.5cm away. However, I had a growth scan last week (27 weeks) and it had moved significantly. Mine is anterior and apparently they are more likely to move. I’ve also felt her move loads since 17 weeks so this hasn’t been a problem. The consultant was never worried- he said 9/10 times the placenta has moved by 34 weeks.

starglass · 16/01/2020 21:54

Mine moved, but I didn't know until 36 weeks when I had an internal scan - it was such an annoyinggly long wait and I hated the uncertainty. And then I ended up with an EMCS for completely different reasons!

Julz89 · 18/01/2020 15:21

I was just told today I have an anterior low lying placenta. I started bleeding on and off since 17 weeks. I am now 23+6 and I hope my placenta moves up.
