Totally freaking out now!
I been on a spa day today and had a massage. I'm 12 weeks pregnant.
I did tell them I was pregnant before massage & I said I don't want tummy done so didn't.

It wasn't a hard massage or anything just really relaxing but Iv now read they can be dangerous to baby because blood flow and toxins. Terrified now! 😭😭
Do you think baby will be ok?

Anything is dangerous if you google it.

Try not to worry. If you’re concerned, ask your midwife, they won’t mind Flowers

FelicityBeedle · 16/01/2020 15:19

Massage does not release toxins, that’s naturopath bullshit as usually reported by massage therapists. I can’t comment on blood flow but I’m sure it’ll be fine

Tubbymissusmacqueen · 16/01/2020 15:23

It’s more towards the end of pregnancy that it can cause problems , something to do with the Lowering of your blood pressure ?
If you felt okay during, no dizziness / feeling faint all should be fine with your baby.

endofthelinefinally · 16/01/2020 15:27

Where on earth did you read this? Either you read nonsense or you didn't understand what you read.
You do need to drink lots of water after a massage. You will be fine.

Doyoumind · 16/01/2020 15:29

In the UK, the guidelines set out by the associations many massage therapists belong to and voluntarily follow state you shouldn't give a massage to someone in the first trimester. Usually they wouldn't be insured to do so.

Massage in the second and third trimester is ok when the therapist knows what they are doing.

The chances of any harm are small and it's really just a precaution. Don't worry about it.

2020BetterBeBetter · 16/01/2020 15:29

It’s rubbish although there is advice for certain oils to be avoided during pregnancy, especially the first trimester.

endofthelinefinally · 16/01/2020 15:31

Massage improves circulation and lymphatic drainage. People often pee a bit more after a massage, so the therapist will encourage you to have a glass of water afterwards.
Clinical studies have been published that confirm beneficial effects on blood pressure. Probably because massage is relaxing.

Mummylanie3 · 16/01/2020 15:35

My friend has her own salon I have regular massages it's the first trimester they don't do it it sure why but any from 12 weeks is fine xx

Doyoumind · 16/01/2020 15:40

The reason is because of the increased risk of miscarriage for anybody in the first trimester, for whatever reason. It's not that massage necessarily causes miscarriage. As I said, it's just a precaution and a term of their insurance.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 16/01/2020 15:49

I remember not being allowed a foot massage on a certain part of my foot when I was at a spa as I was only 14 weeks and they said could trigger labour?! Cant remember the full details as years ago but it terrified me

cloclo92 · 16/01/2020 16:23

I'm a bag of nerves 😭
Definitely think I should be banned from google !

It was a top spa place. Not cheap at all. So I'd hope they knew what they were doing.
& they had warnings on everything ie hot tubs etc for pregnancy. So I'm now thinking maybe I'm being stupid because they wouldn't of done a massage if it was risky. I mean I told her I was 12 weeks. And specifically didn't want tummy done or anything hard & she kept me off my tummy as much as possible

Please don't worry about it. You will be fine.

MySonThePotato · 16/01/2020 16:32

Massage doesn't result in the release of toxins.

I'm not aware there's any evidence that massage 'causes' miscarriage at all, even in the first trimester. However, because many pregnancies sadly end in miscarriage in the first trimester, many alternative therapists and massage therapists avoid giving treatments to women in their first trimester, in case the woman coincidentally has a miscarriage and attributes it to the treatment.

If you're worried, speak to your midwife so she can put your mind at rest.

riceandwhisky · 16/01/2020 18:34

Please don't worry! I've been refused a massage at a spa before and was gutted (little girly day for my best friends engagement). On the flip side I get my partner to massage me all the time and if someone was to mess something up it would be an uncertified masseuse like my other half and I'm perfectly fine!

user1493413286 · 16/01/2020 18:39

I always understood that they were ok after 12 weeks as long as the person knows.
I had a full body massage before I knew I was pregnant and all was fine.

WelcomeToCranford · 16/01/2020 19:02

I had a mother to be massage at 8mo. She sat me beside the couch and I leaned onto it rather than lying on it. I wouldn't worry but maybe next time, just look for a masseuse who is qualified on ante natal massage.

MissDollyMix · 16/01/2020 19:12

Please don’t worry. I’m a qualified masseuse and also struggled so badly with anxiety in pregnancy so I totally understand where you’re coming from. I had reflexology throughout my second pregnancy and I had a much easier pregnancy. I’m sure the relaxing effects of the massage really benefitted both myself and my baby (who is 6 now so not my baby anymore!!) There’s so much scary crap out there on google. A massage will not hurt your baby! The biggest risk to massaging pregnant women is that our skin changes so much during pregnancy you- the mother- can develop intolerances to products that you previously would have been fine with. Babies are really remarkably well protected in there! You and your baby will be just fine.
