Empty sac at 6 week scan

I went for an early scan yesterday as I had had a little bit of spotting. All that could be seen was the sac but nothing else. Is this normal? It was an abdominal scan not an internal. I have another booked for 2 weeks time, but I just feel this combined with the fact I have no pregnancy symptoms is a bad sign!

I had an empty sac seen at 8 weeks. It was a blighted ovum. However, in early pregnancy, a lot can happen in two weeks.
You might just be less far gone than you think you are. Try to not over think it until your next scan.

I don't know why they offer scans at 6 weeks. From what I've seen and read it just causes more worry!! From 7 weeks a heart beat can be seen.

Can you have another scan in a couple of weeks?

Beau2020 · 14/01/2020 12:01

@debss77 perhaps, but we saw a heartbeat and blob at about 5+5 xx

notaregularmom · 14/01/2020 12:01

I had an early scan at 6+2 and they saw an empty sac it was a Blighted ovum, I was told to come back in 2 weeks for another scan and when I did go back it was still the same. My pregnancy symptoms had gone and I had a little bleed too. Fingers crossed you get a different outcome op.

6 weeks is really early, especially given how just one or 2 days makes such a huge difference in terms of growth. If your dates are slightly off then it's not at all unusual to see nothing at that stage.

I had some bleeding on the early weeks & went for a scan at just short of 6 weeks to check for possible ectopic & could only see gestational sac of 9mm.

Had an appointment to go back one week later & there was a 3.5mm embryo with a perfect little heartbeat, she has just turned 1 year old!

If you only had an abdominal ultrasound & not internal then it's even less likely to see anything as you can't get as detailed look.

It could be entirely normal at this stage but obviously hard to know until there's been more time. The waiting is horrible & seems to drag but fingers crossed for a positive outcome for you Smile

Hope for the best but prepare for the worst. At 6 weeks you should be able to see a little bean. Did the sonographer offer an internal? I don't like internal scans but usually they do it if it wasn't clear. If she didn't it was probably clear enough abdominally. Are you sure of your dates?

maria2bela · 14/01/2020 13:22

@toomanyleggings I am sure of dates but I do know that I ovulate late in my cycle, where most people ovulate day 14 I ovulate like day 20/21. Maybe this could be a possible reason.

I had this happen a few years ago unfortunately mine didn't last I hope you get good news it hard to tell in the early stages

toomanyleggings · 14/01/2020 13:30

Well then it is possible that it's more like 5 weeks and maybe you'll see something next scan. Hope for the best for you @maria2bela

I had a scan at 6 weeks and it was an empty sac
1 weeks later there was an embryo
Currently 12 weeks with my dating scan tomorrow

hels1987 · 14/01/2020 13:36

I went for a scan at what I thought was 7 weeks and had exactly the same experience and I was heartbroken. That empty sac is now a 9 week old little girl. I had ovulated later than I thought I had. I know how hard it can be and I'm thinking of you. I hope everything is ok Flowers x

BabyB19 · 14/01/2020 13:40

I had a scan at 6+6 and they couldn't see anything abdominally but did a tv scan and could see a little blob with a heartbeat xx

GoldLeafTree · 14/01/2020 13:40

I had a empty and irregular sac at 6 weeks then the same at 7 weeks.

My HCG was doubling and really high and I had pregnancy symptoms but was told it was a blighted ovum however a woman I made friends with at the EPU had an empty sac at 6 weeks and saw a heartbeat at 7 weeks.

I know it's not much help but all you can do is wait and see ( easier said than done, I know )
