Scan question after previous miscarriage

I am not pregnant but had a miscarriage a few weeks ago. I was just wondering if anyone knew if it was common practice if youd had a miscarriage that if you then got pregnant do they scan you earlier than 12 weeks at the next pregnancy? One of my friends had a miscarriage and when she was pregnant again she was allowed to be scanned at 9 weeks as well as 12 weeks for reassurance really. Just wondered if anyone else had experience of this or did you just have to wait until 12 weeks

In my trust it's only done if you've had a few back to back miscarriages, but from reading posts on here it seems to vary from trust to trust.

Boymummy3 · 12/01/2020 19:25

Usually you have to wait till 12 week. I think some hospitals do scan early if 3 misscarriages have happened one after another but you could always get an early private scan.

I wasn’t offered an early scan on my current pregnancy after a miscarriage. This may differ from different NHS trusts, and presumably also if there have been multiple miscarriages (but don’t know for sure).

LisaSimpsonsbff · 12/01/2020 19:26

Same - where I am it's done after two consecutive miscarriages but I've seen on MN women say they've had an early scan after one miscarriage, and others say it's only after three, so I don't think anyone can tell you unless you say where you live.

I'm really sorry for your loss and I hope you have a healthy pregnancy very soon.

itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted · 12/01/2020 19:27

Unfortunately not - I had a missed miscarriage at 12 weeks and despite several requests early scans were refused on my next pregnancy

I am now under the care of a recurrent miscarriage clinic after several more miscarriages and will get scanned every 2 weeks from 6 weeks on my next pregnancy but I had to be referred to a specialist clinic to access that

You're friend might get lucky as some EPU Will accept self referrals but many insist on either GP or midwife referral first however unless she has bleeding etc in the next pregnancy then reassurance scans aren't likely to be offered by every hospital as it takes up valuable resources

In my trust it's after one miscarriage and they offer you an early scan at 7 - 8 weeks.

Lunafortheloveogod · 12/01/2020 19:31

It depends on your area and what medical management was required here. 3 previous early losses, but all naturally passed before I’d seen a midwife so I didn’t meet the criteria for any extra early scans until I bled, then it was only one scan to check unless anything changed. I’ll add mine we’re spaced out not close together so that may make a difference.

I was given a card from my pregnancy support clinic after my miscarriage which entitled me to an early scan for my next pregnancy. This had been my 3rd miscarriage but I had a successful pregnancy before this miscarriage. The scan was only allowed after 8 weeks though. When I did fall pregnant again I couldn't wait until 8 weeks so booked a private scan at 6.5 weeks, followed by the early scan at 8 weeks, then my 12 week scan (and several more private and NHS scans after that!).

My advice is when you fall pregnant again just book yourself in for a private scan if you can afford it - they are worth every penny to put your mind at ease. For me, I got a bit obsessed by them and paid for quite a few, but they were worth it for my anxiety!

Good luck Smile

My trust it's two consecutive miscarriage before EPU will see you. So chances are you may have to pay privately but it will be worth the money for the peace of mind it'll give you.

Best of luck to you.

I burst into tears when I told my doctor I thought I was pregnant again after my first miscarriage - lovely doc straight away picked up the phone to the hospital and asked if they'd be able to give me a scan at 7 weeks, even though he knew early scans weren't usually offered (they agreed to do it). I had another miscarriage between DC2 and DC3 but wasn't offered an early scan again (I was also, I expect, obviously more mentally prepared for the uncertainty of early pregnancy by then).

Thanks for the info guys and so sorry for your losses x

I think it does depend on your area. After my MC I only got early scans with my next pregnancy due to bleeding. However my friend (in a different area) was offered early reassurance scans at 6 weeks and also 8 weeks after having one MMC before. Good luck x

I had two losses in a row but actually didn't want extra scanning for the third pregnancy. The reason being we'd has a completely normal scan with my second pregnancy at 8 weeks and heard hb, but then found out at the 12 week scan the baby had passed away Sad

So for me personally, an early scan wouldn't have been reassuring.

Since gone on to have two healthy pregnancies (they're now 9 and 12!) and 20 weeks' pg with my third. Didn't have any extra scans with either.

Still really, really scared of scans and very worried about my 20-week one which is on Tuesday. I just hope all is well.

preggersteach · 14/01/2020 20:37

Hope all went well yesterday xx

I had 2 MCs and in this pregnancy, I had scans at 8 weeks and 10 weeks. It isn't standard practice until 3 MCs, but I got a bit teary at my 8 week appointment with the midwife as both of my miscarriages happened, or started around 7-8 weeks. Then the nurse at the hospital offered me a follow up at 10 weeks. Again, she didn't have to and I didn't ask.

bee222 · 14/01/2020 21:41

It really varies. After my first miscarriage they offered me a reassurance scan around 8 weeks the next time I got pregnant. I am now on 3 miscarriages and the next time I get pregnant I will have scans every 2 weeks until 12 weeks.

abbs1 · 14/01/2020 22:27

I had a scan after losing my first baby through miscarriage. I asked for one because I was having cramps and was petrified of losing my second baby so I got one at 7 weeks from EPU just to check I wasnt miscarring again. I then paid for a private one at 9 weeks and then had my normal one at 12 and 20 weeks. I just had an extra one at 28 weeks and been booked for one at 34 weeks as I've been very unwell throughout this pregnancy with hyperemesis.

Elouera · 14/01/2020 22:34

My trust offered a scan at 7-8 weeks at the EPU if my GP referred me back.

I'd previously had had a loss at 11 weeks due to trisomy 13 (random event & we aren't carriers) then MC at 7 weeks in the next pregnancy. I was 39 then, so I'm unsure if it was my age or 2 losses which meant they offered early scans for any subsequent pregnancies. Still TTC though 2yrs after the 2nd loss, so haven't actually had any early/reassurance scans.

R2D2abc · 14/01/2020 22:35

Had 3 miscarriages, I had to beg my gp for one as I had pain in my back, quite bad one. Ended up going to do a private one.

With this pregnancy fortunately GP got a bit worried as again I had pain but also around my ovaries, so got sent to EPAU.

But no one ever considered my 3 miscarriages. Plus my second baby died shortly after birth.

I find sometimes they are rubbish at helping you in this difficult times and don't offer any reassurance or anything.
