Father being 45 years +

Hello Mums,

Have any mums had a baby with a father that is 45 years or more? I am concerned about the age of the father and risks related.. if anyone has input or history with an older father, please share.

My husband will be 50 when dc2 is born.

My brother had his ds when he was 51. Ds now 8, no problems had! DH’s friend had his first child when he was 50, now has two also with no problems. Tiredness is the biggest factor I think! Actually Dh and I had our youngest when he would have been 46, now I come to think of it. Also all fine!

My dh was 45 when our dc was born. Dc5 is a happy, healthy child, no issues at all. I was also concerned about increased risks at the time, but we have been very fortunate.

I know loads of people who have had perfectly healthy babies with older Fathers in their 40s and 50s xx

My grandfather was 60 when my Dad was born!

But there are some additional risks, as with older mothers.

Our DS is 11.
I was 35 when he was born, DH was 48.
DH says DS keeps him young!

Both of my DC that were born when DH was over 45 are autistic. There is a higher risk with older fathers but I am also autistic so that upped the odds anyway. That said our DC born when DH was younger is NT.

He is now over 60 and has a whole range of health problems that impact the family, again that doesn't happen to everyone, but the risk is higher all the same.

I have always been quite the advocate for age gap relationships, but the older we both become; the more aware I am of the pitfalls.

DP's dad was 40 something when he had him. He's now 74 all is good ☺️

Dp will be 50 when our second arrives in June, I’m slightly nervous for our 20week scan next week in case there is anything wrong but he’s fab with our 3yr old who i will add is luckily a happy healthy little girl 😊🤞🏼

My FIL was nearly 70 when my husband was born! Unfortunately he lost his dad when he was just a young boy however, he has no medical conditions relating to his fathers age, nor do our children ❤️

The big issue that people don't seem to consider is that the child will likely be dealing with a father dying or needing care at a younger age than his/her peers, and that is very difficult to cope with. It is so important to plan for the future, but even more so where an older parent is concerned.

My dad was 60 when i was born. He was mostly worried about his mortality.

45 is ok. He'll be 65 when your kid is 20 so if he's living a relatively active and healthy life, he can still expect to be ok by then.

When I was younger having older parents was unusual and my dad got mistaken for my grandad. But today i doubt that'll be the case as more parents are older. I see lits of older dad's out there and they all seem like really good dads.
