Glucose tolerance test - should I be offered one?

I’m 24 weeks pregnant and was reading on a pregnancy website that women at the 24-28 weeks stage “will probably be offered a glucose tolerance test”. My midwife hasn’t mentioned this yet, although I am due to see her at the end of next week. I don’t have any history of diabetes in my family. Has anyone else been offered this test?

I was offered due to my BMI. If you've not been offered one I wouldn't worry it's just because you have no risk factors.

I had it in pregnancy because of my family history of diabetes. If you haven't been offered one you probably don't meet the criteria

No, you won’t be routinely offered one on the NHS. Is the pregnancy website American by any chance?

Here is the NHS guidance:

www.nhs.uk/conditions/gestational-diabetes/

Meet any of that criteria & you’ll be offered one! Otherwise no.

You may also be offered one is for some reason baby is judged to be large or growing very quickly. I had a growth scan due to reduced movement at 32 weeks last pregnancy & they thought baby was huge. So I got sent for one. Baby was 8lb at birth so they got that wrong!

Do you meet any of the criteria for it? Bmi over 30? Any glucose ever shown on urine dips so far?

If you’re not at risk for it they don’t tend to test for it tbh. It’s not a simple blood draw either, here it’s done at hospital, fasting from 8pm first blood at 9am then the drink (isn’t nice on an empty stomach) and waiting 2hours with as little activity as possible and no food and not allowed to go a wander anywhere but you do get a lecture on what could be your diet. Next blood at 11. Wait for results then home.. when the kind midwifes finally let us eat Grin (all in with travel I was out at 5.30am, buses are great, and didn’t get breakfast till 1pm and felt like shit for the day). All clear as expected too.

I knew I was getting the test at my 8week appointment, they filled in a questionnaire that highlighted any risk factors n booked it from there.

I'm on my second baby now and haven't had the glucose test either time. You've got to have a bmi over 30 or have diabetes in your (mums) family.

The NHS website is not updated. You will be also offered one if you have PCOS. I do and did my other pregnancies and I've been offered one every time. Never had GD and hopefully not this time.

I was offered one because I keep feeling faint and dizzy a lot, I got offered at 36weeks and this is the first time in my second pregnancy, I was told I should of got given it ages ago due to my ethnic background also I have family members that suffered with diabetes.

SnoozyLou · 11/01/2020 13:05

Yes. I have a BMI of 30 and had a large baby last time. I actually got told off in my last pregnancy for not having one until the late stages. Not really sure how that's my fault if no one told me, but oh well!

They tested me twice in the end as baby measured big all along (10lb 5 in the end). Big babies just seem to run in my family as I was almost 10lb. I have my glucose test already booked this time at 24 weeks.

Thanks all! I read it on this website: www.pampers.co.uk/pregnancy/pregnancy-calendar/24-weeks-pregnant

I don’t meet any of the criteria so it sounds like I won’t be offered it!
