O Negative Blood

My midwife informed me today that I am O negative and that it can cause some issues for baby if they end up with a positive blood type. She said that if I bleed I need to call the hospital, I forgot to say to her that I've had spotting. Does that count? Anyone had any issues with this? :(

Call and be safe. Shouldn't harm this baby but could if you want anymore in future. You will need anti d injections.

Dullblue · 10/01/2020 19:19

You will need an Anti d injection within 72hrs of the bleeding.
Call your EPU/Maternity unit and they will sort it out for you.

I'm negative too. Just call the midwives and you'll get given the anti d injection. It can't hurt this baby, but can be difficult in future pregnancies if you haven't had the anti d.

I had a tiny amount of spotting at about 20 weeks, called and they gave anti d the next day. Said it was absolutely no worry for the pregnancy and that a positive blood type they wouldn't have done anything for them as it's completely normal to spot throughout the pregnancy.

The spotting happened weeks ago, before I knew about my blood type. I called my local hospital at the time and they just said to contact my GP the next day if it continued.

@erised I'm also negative. How many weeks were you when you bled? It's not a problem until after 12 weeks. I bled three times before 12 weeks. Touch wood I haven't since, but I was told if I did bleed after 12 weeks or had a knock to my bump I needed to call. I had my routine anti D at 28 weeks.

erised · 10/01/2020 19:57

I was 10 or 11 weeks, also had spotting at the start of my pregnancy.

I’m o neg and had early spotting. Didn’t occur to me to worry, I had the anti D injection later in pregnancy. Call the midwife unit at your hospital to be safe but I’m sure it’s fine

Pinkcat231 · 10/01/2020 19:59

I had the same as you, not told about my blood type at the time of asking midwife about the spotting either Hmm

They check to see if you’ve created antibodies from it at your next blood test then, if you haven’t, give you the anti d shot just after (think it was 48 hours). If you’ve created them I think they refer you to a specialist but I hadn’t luckily.

Just get the anti d if you have any more bleeding or any kind of trauma to your bump, knocking it/ falling etc. And try not to worry in the meantime Smile

I was the same, spotting on and off until 15 weeks, then at my 16 week appointment found out I was A- but didn’t think to mention it, had anti d later on in pregnancy and then an injection after she was born and was found to be positive

Emberfoot · 10/01/2020 23:10

Where I am they are now doing testing on my blood (I am A-) to see if baby's dna in it shows as positive or negative. If that something you will be having done?

Try not to worry, it’s quite common to have rhesus negative blood (something like 15% of the population).

I’m O Negative and pregnant with my third. With the first two, I had the Anti D injection at 28 weeks as standard, even though the baby was also rhesus negative (my husband is too, so we can’t have a rh+ baby, but they have to err on the side of caution!). Then once the baby is here they check the baby’s blood type and give you a second injection if the baby has rh positive blood (which mine didn’t, obviously).

This time I’ve moved area and they sample the foetal blood type here, it happens with the booking bloods. Baby is rh- (still have the same husband!) so this time they haven’t given me the injection.

As others have said, if you have any bleeding/knocks to the bump call the hospital so you can have the injection.
