Anyone else planning on using reusable nappies and wipes?

This is my third pregnancy and I'm planning on using reusable wipes and nappies this time round. I brought some pocket nappies from little lamb and wipes from cheeky wipes.

The guide from the nappies said to wash a few times before first use to make them more absorbent, so I've got them in the washing machine for the first time now.

I'm 34+6 now so still a while to go yet but want to be prepared. I'm a bit nervous about using reusables and DH isn't convinced.

I used little with my first and it was fine for the first few months. I think I got the 2nd size ones as well but he was peeing so much I didn't like how the whole nappy was soaking. And the water proof wraps became abit smelly. If I have any advice it would be invest in more wraps.
I was going to to use them with my 2nd but I never got in to it, just too much washing for me to handle. I've since got rid of them so not going to use them this time.
My sil used reusables and was far more successful than me!

Ive used them with both DC. Don't be surprised if they don't fit to begin with, little lamb fitted pockets didn't fit my ds until he was about 12 weeks and he was an average sized boy (8lb)

I used to prefer all in ones but this time around I'm loving little lamb two partners with blueberry Capri wraps.

Hoping to yes. Just started researching really.

I've got the pocket nappies which are different to the wraps. They have a pocket which you stuff with a bamboo pad thing. Hope that makes sense!

Mouse, they do look quite big! My last two were big babies so hopefully it won't be too long before they fit. What did you use before they grew into them?

I’ve just started using pocket nappies from littles and blooms on four month old baby and at night on three year old. The instructions say to wash at 30* and I was surprised that the baby poo actually came off without leaving a stain. The liners take forever to dry so I’m tumble drying them on a low heat. So far, I’m pleased with them.

CookingProblem · 10/01/2020 19:02

Belfast, I found it really confusing when I first started looking into it but I think I've got my head round it now.

I've been using cheeky wipes for a while now and they really are great, so much better than normal wipes in every way and I don't understand why anyone wouldn't use them!

RhymingRabbit3 · 10/01/2020 19:07

I used reusable nappies part time with my first baby. Planning to go full time and reusable wipes for second (I'm 30 weeks pregnant).
It's really not that complicated once you start doing it. We still used disposable nappies for some occasions - e.g. when grandparents had her, long car journeys and overnight.
What is it that DH isn't sure about?

Longfox · 10/01/2020 19:07

My son is coming up to two years old and I've used reusable nappies since he was 12 weeks old, the little lamb ones I had (2 in one with wrap) were too big when he was tiny. I've since moved onto mama koala for daytime, but still use little lamb at night. Im still using the same nappies (size 2) since he grew out of size 1 approximately 14 months ago. I use www.fill-your-pants.com for all my purchases and their advice and customer service is excellent. Good luck 😀

knittedgoldfish · 10/01/2020 19:09

We will be using them with number 2, and did for our first. Little lamb pockets, Totsbots bamboozles for night, and cheeky wipes. They are all great and we were so pleased we went for it.

owlalwaysloveyou · 10/01/2020 19:09

Been using little lamb all in one since about 3/4 weeks (he was 10lbs 5 but long so didn't fit comfortably for a few weeks and we used disposable in that time) always used cheeky wipes. He's only 4 months but honestly i love them. I'm far from a good housewife type but you're doing that wee bit extra washing with baby stuff anyway so i just do his as his own load (then I'm not shrinking his vests in drier etc 🙈). Even if the nappies were a bit much i think lots more people would like the wipes if they were better advertised than, for example "water wipes, as gentle as pure water on baby skin" i prefer just using water and he isn't having any reactions. Used disposable wet wipes twice and both times his skin broke out badly. I'd recommend buying some extra bamboo boosters as baby gets older especially in colder weather I'm finding it more difficult to dry them just in time but going to buy another few packs soon. They do dry quickly and the nappies barely need hung up to dry if I'm honest! Good luck with everything!

DD is 2.5 months and we've been using cloth nappies since she was a week old and love them. DH was also not convinced and his first reaction was 'you are not putting shit in the washing machine!' 😂 A few times we ran out of reusables and he witnessed a disposable nappy poonami and was converted.

The pocket nappies themselves won't need multiple washes as there is no absorbency in them but you could bung the bamboo inserts in a few times.

I like the LL pockets so far but DD only fitted in them from probably 8 weeks, even though she was born at nearly 9 pounds. Until that point we used Littles and bloomz newborn pockets. Muslins and wraps are often given as a good newborn system until they fit in the birth to potty nappies.

For lots of nappy advice I recommend 'Cloth Nappies UK' on Facebook and 'Clean Cloth Nappies' for great wash advice to keep your nappies clean and fresh :)

FrederickSinclair · 10/01/2020 19:12

Yes, they are all I've used with DS1 and planning on same again for DS2 due in a few weeks Smile I love them. I use two parters, Easy Peasy Bimbles for newborn and Motherease Sandy's for older with Motherease Airflow wraps. Never had a single leak.

CupCupGoose · 11/01/2020 09:10

Thanks for all the advice and tips. I'm pleased I started this thread! I joined the Facebook groups mentioned and I've learnt loads already.

DH isn't keen because he thinks they'll smell and doesn't think I'll keep up with the washing ect. Can't use the cost as an advantage as reusables will work out much more expensive than disposables. I'm purely doing it for environmental reasons which DH doesn't care about. Never mind. I will prove him wrong!

Good shout about not washing the outer nappy bit again as it isn't very absorbent. I didn't even think of that.

I've got 50 wipes, do you think that's enough?

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 11/01/2020 09:19

Im planning on using reusable nappies, but tbh we've been given so many 'nappy cakes' from family I have a drawer full of disposables so it'd be a shame not to use them first. Once they're used up and the babies a bit bigger im going to move to reuseables. Ive seen from this thread that they dont fit from birth anyway, so I dont think thats a bad thing.

Ive got some cheeky wipes though. They seem so much more sensible and less wasteful than disposable wipes.

myfuckingfreezer · 11/01/2020 09:20

DH isn't keen because he thinks they'll smell and doesn't think I'll keep up with the washing ect.

Why is that just your responsibility?

FrederickSinclair · 11/01/2020 09:26

How will reusables work out more expensive? There's an initial outlay but they have worked out much cheaper for us in the long run so far. My DH wasn't that on board either to be honest but he raves about them now. Also 50 wipes is more than enough! I have a rotation of 20 and they get used for bottoms and faces.

McHelenz · 11/01/2020 10:37

I've just bought the cheeky wipes, currently 40 weeks with my first. I want to use reusable nappies too but at the moment I just wanted to get used to have a newborn then maybe when the weather gets better I'll progress to the nappies!

Zippetydoodahzippetyay · 11/01/2020 10:57

I used them part time with my second. Basically I only had 5, so I would use them on Monday, wash and dry them then use them again Thursday or Friday. I found them actually very easy to use but not as absorbent as disposables so required changing more frequently. Not really an issue though.

GemmaJen · 11/01/2020 11:51

We've used since birth on my 4 month old. They've been great, we use a mixture of little lambs, Bambino mios and totsbots with cheeky wipes. We used disposables when on holiday recently and it just felt so wrong.
