39 weeks + 1 day - high blood pressure and protein in urine

So just back from my midwife appointment. Was meant to have a sweep however That didn’t happen as I have protein in my urine, blood pressure is 166/90 and I would say my swollen hands and feet are just the same.

I am being sent up to hospital to get checked out.

Would anyone be able to tell me what to expect? Do I need to worry? Do you think I’ll get induced?

They will be suspecting pre eclampsia and from what I've heard from others if you have it they usually get baby out ASAP as it can be bad for you both. Don't worry untill your at the hospital but make sure you ask all questions you need to.

shutupsteph · 08/01/2020 12:44

This happened to a close friend of mine but she was passed 40 weeks so she was induced the next day.

I went in at 23 weeks with the same symptoms, I was in triage all day while they ran a lot of blood tests checking my liver etc but they may just have a discussion with you about induction as you're full term so it's perfectly safe to get baby out. Keep as calm as you can, harder said than done but you're in the best place possible!

Sunshinegirl82 · 08/01/2020 12:48

My honest answer OP is not to panic but to expect them to induce you immediately or very soon. They won't hang about given that you are at term. Those are the classic signs of Pre Eclampsia.

Take your hospital bag with you and ask your birthing partner to make themselves available. Good luck.

My friend was 36 weeks with these symptoms, and she had pre-eclampsia and they induced her, but all was fine with her and the baby!

@OP it's great you are past 39 weeks. As others said you might have preeclampsia and might be offered induction or C-section, depending on how you and baby are doing. 39 weeks it's really great and good your midwife picked up this at your appointment. Hospital will check better and will be able to give you a definite answer.

Thanks everyone. Just at the hospital waiting now. Just hope everything is ok xx

Hi, that happened to me at 36+3 first time around and 40 weeks second time around. Prepare you bags in case as both times I was told to go to hospital for monitoring and they didn't let me out until I'd been induced and had babies :)

2018isanewyear · 08/01/2020 13:49

This happened to me at 36+3, I was admitted that day and booked for a c-sec (breech baby) the next day after steroids (I think because I was before 37 weeks)

I had issues with blood pressure throughout and occasional protein in urine and at that point was having daily monitoring they wasn't happy with movements either so it's not like it came from nowhere.

Good luck! Important thing is it's been picked up and dealt with 👍🏼

neverornow · 08/01/2020 14:05

This happened to me and it was preeclampsia. I was admitted to hospital and given blood pressure meds for 2 days before they decided to induce me.

Good luck!

Still in hospital waiting on blood results. I’ve had blood pressure taken quite a lot and just had a scan. Midwife said I could go for a drink at cafe. Assessment unit is busy...not sure whether to take that as a positive sign.

Blood pressure still high but not as high as it was.

Midwife I’m dealing with up here said a sweep may have helped blood pressure...my community midwife thought different.

I get the feeling I might get set home but who knows...xx

Any more news?? Did you get home are is baby on the way?

Mamaofdos · 09/01/2020 12:01

Was sent home! Blood test came back clear and blood pressure had came down. I’ve to see a consultant on Friday through my community midwife.

The midwife in the hospital did give me a sweep but no sign of labour yet. Xx

My blood pressure went from being totally normal on the Monday to being dangerously high by Friday & I swelled up like a Michelin man with proteins in my wee. I fought being admitted to hospital that day & most of the day after, the midwife conned me in to going to the hospital to be "checked over" & I was admitted much to my disgust to be induced as I have a terror of being in hospital without having someone with me to support me. I was induced on the saturday & my induction failed 48 hours later, I had an emcs with a massive pph & ended up in high dependency with HELLP syndrome, my blood pressure hadn't reduced much when I discharged myself 4 days later. After high dependency I had just been dumped in a room on post natal ward with virtually no care & I was sure that being frightened to death on my own wasn't doing my blood pressure any good. Two days after I came home my blood pressure shot up again, but my lovely GP listened to me & treated me at home, he told the midwife that unless my blood pressure went over a certain limit that I was not to be admitted & he came & saw me at home every evening with my midwife calling every morning, he increased the medication until it started to properly bring my BP down. It took a good month before it settled properly, I was in bed at home for well over a week after my midwife kindly told all my in laws family that them constantly visiting & requesting to see ds was not doing my BP any good. My mum helped look after me & supported me through PND & PTSD which my experience in hospital left me with. I was on medication for 3 months before it was gradually reduced & stopped.

Andtwomakesix · 09/01/2020 13:38

Fingers crossed it kickstarts something soon :)

Mamaofdos · 09/01/2020 14:55

@Nat6999 that sounds awful! How did you feel when your blood pressure was high? I will definitely ask to get my blood pressure taken again tomorrow at my consultant appointment.

I hope you are keeping well now.

This is what scares me...so close but so much can happen from now until my little one is born 😓

I have been in for reduced movements a couple of times. So I am not sure if I have a consultant appointment for the movements or the blood pressure or both. I would have been happy to stay in hospital but was given all clear... xx

My ds is 16 in a couple of weeks, I felt like my head was in a goldfish bowl, my face felt like it was going to explode, one of my legs swelled so much that there was 6 inches difference from the other one, after I came out of high dependency, the care I received was awful, I was just dumped in a room & left to get on with it. Nobody took time to notice that my nerves were shot, the first night after ds was born at 6.22pm I became very poorly, my organs were failing & I begged them to fetch my husband & parents back because I felt like I was dying, they refused. I was begging for a drink because I had been nil by mouth for 36 hours, I was only allowed 5ml an hour, plus I had some bloody midwife trying to force me to breast feed, I was drifting in & out of consciousness due to being so poorly & all the drugs they were giving me, had cannula in both arms, a drain, a catheter & a port in my stomach for morphine & anti clotting drugs, I didn't know where I was really. It took until I came out of my drugged haze 48 hours later for me to find my voice & demand a bottle for ds, my mum & husband had been asking but staff wouldn't accept their request, poor ds was starving when he got his first bottle, drank it that fast he threw most of it back again.
