Growth scan

I’m 35 + 5 and have had a growth scan and the current weight of the baby from the scan is 6lb12oz. I’m very worried about how big the baby is going to be as it’s above the large line! I’m 5,2 and first time mum!
As it’s a scan and not a guess from the size of my belly, is this accurate? Or has anyone else had a growth scan that has predicted a large baby and been wrong?
Would be grateful for any responses x

As I understand it growth scans can be out by a significant amount, but it will depend upon the ability of whoever did the scan.

Don’t forget that often big babies are longer and that’s not more difficult to get out. Whilst some big babies can get stuck, which is usually the concern, they also typically only have way to go out which often tends to reduce the severity of tears. Smaller babies have sharp nails and can put their hands over their faces and cause damage as they come out in a way bigger ones can’t. Also, at almost 36 weeks, an almost 7lb baby will be term in just over a week so don’t assume the baby will necessarily stay put until your due date or be overdue.

Think it's 10% margain of error when it comes to growth scans. I'm the same as you at my last growth Scan at 34 weeks baby was est 6lb 14oz.. If they think baby is going to be too big they may offer you an early induction have you seen a consultant to discuss your scan etc?

Try not to panic! I had a scan at 36 weeks and baby was predicted to be 7lb 3oz. Cue panic, tears, fear of induction/ third degree tears. Went into spontaneous labour 3 days later and DC was 6lb 12oz. Already 1/2 a lb out! She was around 8lb 10 on her due date so still wouldn’t have been horrifically big! Big babies (within reason) are good- sleep better, feed better etc. Don’t worry :)

@2020BetterBeBetter thank you. He’s currently lying transverse so they did say it’s unlikely I’ll go into labour early as there’s no low pressure to dilate the cervix

@Boymummy3 I did see a consultant and I’m having a scan but at 39 weeks, so still another 3 weeks away. Do you have any further scans before your due date?
@Napqueen1234 glad it’s not just me who had a major panic then! Aww how lovely! I’m so excited, but this just put the fear into me.

If he stays transverse, you’ll be very highly recommended a c section as a vaginal labour wouldn’t be safe.

Just to reassure you, I'm 5ft 2in and my dd was 8lb 10oz at delivery, delivered vaginally, and the birth was very quick. I did have some tearing and a couple of stitches, but I recovered pretty quickly. She was transverse for a while but managed to right herself before the birth thankfully.

My friend was induced at 37 weeks be cause her growth scan measured baby at 10lbs
He was born just over 7lbs

Thank you everyone for the advice 😌

Hi all, writing here as I also had a growth scan today following a midwife appointment from yesterday where my belly measured the same as last time, currently 36w5d, baby is 6lb8oz , within range I would say, but can someone explain what are those percentages next to measurements? Attached a pic ..

@thinkblue20 yeah I have another scan tomorrow (37+4) and been told I may have another at 39 weeks.. But it's all going to depend what the scan says tomorrow. Incudtion at 40 weeks has been mentioned to me but nothing set in stone yet

bessie84 · 08/01/2020 13:15

my growth scans been massive too.

28+2 weeks - 3lb 2oz
32+2 weeks - 4lb 11oz
36+2 weeks - 7lb 2oz

im also freaking out, cos I literally am HUGE - however due to history (and been 5th and final baby) im booked for a section on Monday at 38+1. im hoping scan is wrong, cos they've said by Monday he'll be between 8&9 lb. yikes.

have you had a GTT? I don't think large babies as such (unless you have GD) are anything to worry about, they always say to me, they prefer big than small and not growing. Like others have said, they may offer induction. ps: this baby was transverse for aaggeees, hes just gone head down, still plenty of time to turn.

don't worry and good luck x

I’m 5ft2. Mine was (I don’t know if she was considered big) and although it was a difficult labour, I think that was more due to the fact I had to be induced via the drip rather than going into labour naturally. The pessaries didn’t work on me either.

You’ll be fine.

My bump was really small and she was measuring smaller than she should have on the scans so having a 9 pounder was a shock.
