Hi,

How far were you when you told your workplace you were pregnant?

I'm finding it hard not to tell my manager as I am starting to have morning sickness and might need time off. I'm finding it difficult to teach Sad

Legally you have to 15 weeks before your due date, I think.
But I told my work straight away as I had lost 2 beforehand and 1 time at work so they had to be notified in case I suddenly needed to leave.
I was lucky that they were very understanding, and I ended up glad that I told them because as soon as I hit 7 weeks I got hyperemesis and there was no way to hide it!

I told my boss at about 16 weeks and my wider team at 20 weeks, because I’d got the MatB1 form then & started to sort out the HR/recruitment processes. Lucky to not be too sick or have other symptoms in the first trimester that would have given me away.

15 weeks before due date is the statutory cut off.

Zm2019 · 06/01/2020 19:38

I was on the Gov uk website earlier, reading up on statutory maternity pay. It asked to fill a few details in not personal ones and it told me whether I would be entitled to it. I am due end of August and the website told me to tell my employers by middle of May.
I am going to tell the office manager after my 1st midwife appointment but try and hold off telling everyone else till after scan.

I told my manager straight away, just in case anything happened and I needed time off to handle it.

jdy123 · 06/01/2020 20:20

I told my manager soon after I found out, probably 6-7 weeks. Easier to ask for appointments off and as I had 2 previous early miscarriages I thought was best to say incase anything happened and explained why I was so anxious Smile

peachypetite · 06/01/2020 20:22

If you feel that bad I’d say tell them. No point suffering in silence.

babybrain77 · 06/01/2020 20:25

I told my manager and CEO at 8 weeks... hard to hide it when you're running out several times a day to stick your head down the loo!!

plixy · 06/01/2020 20:39

Due to recurrent miscarriages I was offered scans at 6,8 & 10 weeks. I didn't want to take this as holiday (cheeky I know) so told me employer at 5 weeks, which meant I was entitled to take the time off for appointments.

WombatStewForTea · 06/01/2020 21:27

Do you teach primary or secondary op? I'd strongly suggest you let them know now but ask for it to be kept confidential. That way they can keep you safe if children have any infectious illnesses that are dangerous in pregnancy.
I think I told my head at about 7/8 weeks partly for that reason, partly as I'd had a miscarriage not long before and didn't know if I'd need her support again and partly because I wanted to give her a chance to move me out of Y6 before she announced classes as I knew I'd be leaving at Christmas

My manager & the department director at 7 weeks ish both times. I suffer with HG and I genuinely couldn’t think of a suitable lie for my absences & not great performance during the first 16 or so weeks!

It was such a relief to tell them. They are both male & both incredibly supportive. They quietly reduced my work load and covered my absences with colleagues. Most of my colleagues guessed but officially found out at 12 weeks first time. This time, I told them all at 7 weeks as I was so ill, I couldn’t be bothered to lie!

happyendings1 · 07/01/2020 07:25

Didn't tell my employer until the government cut off point. I was worried they would discriminate and whilst legally they did nothing wrong they made things unnecessarily harder for me once they knew I was pregnant.

Mimi91 · 07/01/2020 07:48

I told mine at 11 weeks, simply because I needed time off for antenatal appointments. Your employer should cover the time you have at your appointments and you shouldn't have to use your sick days or annual leave.

Personally I felt I could relax a bit more once everyone knew.

@happyendings1 that's terrible they made things harder for you Sad

SnoozyLou · 07/01/2020 08:09

I told mine after my 12 week scan.

TillyTheTiger · 07/01/2020 08:19

If you tell them early they can do your pregnancy risk assessment, make sure you get paid time off for antenatal appointments and can make allowances for you feeling dreadful.
I didn't tell my employer until 22 weeks (because I was applying for promotion, which I got), but by that point I was finding it hard to hide!
You can tell your manager but ask them to keep it confidential until you're ready to tell other colleagues?

latheritup · 07/01/2020 08:31

I told my manager at 7 weeks due to sickness.

GrannyBags · 07/01/2020 08:38

Told a colleague as soon as I found out as we were both TTC and taught in next door classrooms. She was a couple of weeks behind me so we ended up covering for each other when we had to leave the room quickly! We both told the Head a couple of weeks after that and everyone else at 12 weeks. Several people had guessed - that was the year that every member of staff who could have a baby DID have a baby!

Garbosdinner · 07/01/2020 08:40

Told my manager as soon as I knew. A) because she is a good friend. B) because my work could involve being attacked.

ForeverBubblegum · 07/01/2020 11:01

I told my close colleagues soon as I new, because there were some tasks that I could no longer do, but that could be covered within our small team without affecting the wider business.

Didn't tell my boss until after the 12 week scan, as was a little worried they would be difficult, so didn't want to open that can of worms until I know it was a sticker. (They were actually fine, I'm just a worrier)

PrinnyPree · 07/01/2020 14:19

I told my work at 7 weeks just because morning sickness was making me feel like hell and I ended up taking a few days off in the first trimester. It just made it easier for me and luckily they eased the pressure off me a bit.
