High Blood Pressure

Hi,

My wife is now 37 weeks pregnant today. Over the last 2 and a half weeks she has been suffering from high blood pressure.

It all started at a scan (as we are on the scan pathway) and the baby wasnt progressing as much as they would like. Booked in for another appointment tomorrow but has been cancelled and rearranged and now is on Thursday for another growth scan.

So took her BP and was high, waited till after dinner and was high again and called the MAU. She got admitted and put on meds, now for the last two weeks she has to take her BP at home if it is over 140/90 she has to call and subsequently go in. This has been the case on every day except a few with her meds being changed and increased.

She took a turn last Saturday (at 36 weeks) and given steroids if the baby needed to be delivered. She was readmitted but then released as it was back under control.

All the time the doctors have been saying that until 37 weeks it's very difficult unless a strong medical reason to deliver the baby premature. Today (finally reached 37 weeks) her BP was high, went in and they just increased the medication again (now on 12 pills a day) to try and keep BP down until scan on Thursday.

The meds are tough on my wife and she is very fed up, sick off them and always tired. During all of this the baby has been monitored but is very active and TCG is always fine.

We are both just very stressed and we were hoping today a decision would be made to induce but still nothing. I'm terrified that the baby will just die for some reason (I'm not sure how likely that is?).

Has anyone else been through this? What was the outcome? So far there is no sign if pre eclampsia but she has started getting protein in her urine.

Please be reassured they will deliver the baby if any signs it is struggling or your wife is in any danger. The baby is close to full term so should do well when delivered. They know which bp meds are safe in pregnancy. I was on meds through my pregnancy and all was well. If they admit your wife try to be philosophical and encourage her to sit tight and try to rest, watch tv, read entertaining books or magazines. Resting will keep the bp as low as possible. Good luck for the new arrival.
