Aspirin question

Hi when I had my 12 weeks scan I also saw midwife and doctor as with my first baby I had the start of pre eclampsia. Didnt have any extra monitoring or anything when I had my second child and I didn't get pre eclampsia. Now I'm pregnant with my third and the doctor at the hospital prescribed me aspirin to take daily until I give birth. I havent started taking it yet as I had really bad sickness so wouldn't have stayed down anyway and I'll be honest I dont like the idea of take medication in pregnancy especially since aspirin when you read up on it says you shouldn't take when pregnant. Should I start taking it like I was prescribed to when I went to my 12 week appointment ? I'm 16 weeks now.

Is it 'baby' aspirin?

sjmco · 05/01/2020 20:55

I've been taking aspirin since about week 16... I'm now at week 29. I take it every night xx

I was on aspirin last pregnancy as with DS2 had severe preeclampsia. My dose then was 75 mg.

Now 23 weeks pregnant and taking 150 mg( apparently new studies show it's much better this dose).

I think there has been a lot of studies done in regards to preeclampsia and aspirin and it's really safe to take( the one that doctor prescribed you).

www.nhs.uk/conditions/pre-eclampsia/

Says: If you're thought tobe ata high risk of developing pre-eclampsia, you may be advised to take a daily dose oflow-dose aspirinfrom the 12th week of pregnancy until your baby is delivered

Smurf123 · 05/01/2020 20:58

I took 75mg of aspirin daily until 36 weeks of pregnancy due to previous miscarriages.
I've been told I will need to take 150mg daily as ds stopped growing due to placenta stopping working from about 33 weeks. I was told by consultant that even 150mg is a low amount and is safe in pregnancy

mummy1214 · 05/01/2020 21:09

Its 150mg she prescribed me 1 month worth as that's all hospital were allowed to then said either go to my gp for more or just buy 150mg aspirin over the counter

Have taken aspirin since conception, am now 28 weeks. Currently take 150mg every night before bed.

It’s very safe in pregnancy at 75/150mg (depending what you’ve be prescribed) once a day.

The warning on the box is for the larger dose you take multiple times a day for pain relief etc.

ChillyB · 05/01/2020 21:13

I would rather take aspirin than have severe pre-eclampsia again; much better to reduce the risk in my opinion.

shutupsteph · 05/01/2020 21:37

I'm also taking 150mg of aspirin every day, their only reason is my 'elevated BMI' and if I'm honest I hate that I'm having too plow my body with medication based on what I believe to be a weak reason but I've expressed my worries to the consultant and my midwife and they've assured me it's very safe

ChickenNugget86 · 06/01/2020 09:14

I take baby aspirin 75mg daily due to having a stroke when I was younger. Its to help thin the blood. When I found out I was pregnant I was told to increase it to 150mg baby aspirin a day. Its safe to take as it reduces the risk of pre-eclampsia, blood clots etc...
I also have to take tinzaparin injections every day into my tummy = not fun

squee123 · 06/01/2020 18:49

I am on 150mg a day. My consultant assures me it has great potential benefits with no significant known risks. I was also told that there is evidence that the earlier you start the better in terms of preserving placental function, so I would start asap

I had my booking appointment with the midwife on Thursday and she has said that because my mum had pre-eclampsia I should take 150mg aspirin everyday from 12 weeks to help prevent it.

Mumtobe87 · 10/01/2020 22:42

I'm 37 weeks and have been takin baby aspirin since I found out I was pregnant. Some Dr's even suggest to carry on takin it after the birth

bolya · 10/04/2021 12:18

Hello. I have seen your post about your pregnancy with tinzaparin and aspirin. If you don't mind I would like to ask if you had to take aspirin 150mg alongside with tinzaparin from the beginning of your pregnancy? Did the aspirin had any affect on your child as I read it is recommended from the12th week of the pregnancy. Thank you in advance for your reply.

Nia18 · 10/04/2021 20:22

I had preeclampsia with my last baby. Diagnosed at 28 weeks, gave birth at 30 weeks.

I've been on 150mg of aspirin since 11 weeks. To be honest if they told me I had to snort a line every day to try to prevent it I would.
My experience was so traumatic its given me PTSD and my daughter will always have the physical scars and be influenced by the suffering she experienced at birth.

I'm 34 weeks now and thankfully I'm not showing any symptoms, but I'm constantly worried.

Please take it. For the sake of one or two tablets a day you could prevent something traumatic.

Sleepisoverrated150 · 10/04/2021 20:48

I had 75mg aspirin for IUGR and took it before 12 weeks.

All medicines will say don’t take when pregnant as the pharma companies don’t want to be sued.

If your doctor has prescribed it then it’s been shown to be safe in the BNF even if the PIL still states do not take when pregnant. Enough studies will have been done that’s it’s shown to be safe.

abeanbaked · 10/04/2021 22:38

Aspirin is a very safe drug. 150mg is a low dose, just take it. I take it as I have family history of pre-eclampsia.

Grognonne · 11/04/2021 08:54

I think it’s very common now. I take 150mg aspirin along with tinzaparin everyday since I found out I was pregnant and will continue up to 6wks after birth.
