Reusable nappies - opinions?

I'd like to give reusable nappies a chance this time round. Would you recommend them?
This may make me sound silly but how do they work? I understand for wee I'd just shove it in the machine but what about other "waste"? do you just tip it out into the toilet?
Yes I feel very silly!

I found this very useful

I'm still undecided on what to use myself but it's very well explained.

Love them! We use liners. The worst of the poo goes in the toilet then put liners and nappies in the washing machine on a hot pre-wash/rinse before a cooler proper wash. I've found DS's poos to be fairly compacted and rarely loose so most of it falls off into the loo fairly well! Grin

I highly recommend them!

I used disposables last time (10years ago), and went straight to reusable this time. I would say it takes a bit of getting used to, and getting into your own routine with them, but now I don’t even think about it, it’s just another part of having a baby like tidying up his toys are just part and par of the deal.

There are different types of nappies, so it’s worth having a read around about them.
What I would absolutely recommend is buying a few different brand second hand before committing to one brand, as what you think theoretically might be what you want, in reality you mightn’t get on with.

In terms of washing. Breastfeeding pooey nappies can just go straight in the washing machine as they’re water soluble, once you’re weaning you’ll need to use liners (washable/disposable) which catches most of the poo, and then you plop/scrap/flush the contents down the loo, then wash as normal.

They require a pre wash then a wash, because of how machine ‘recycle’ their water during the wash.

Different nappy materials will dry quicker/slower than others, so it’s worth considering the material and also how/where you will dry them.

Some people go full pelt straight away, others do day time only, and use disposables over night. You will likely find that if you’re using them overnight you need either a different nappy and/or a booster to contain the extra volume of urine.

I’m using reusables full time, and on my second baby so really getting my money’s worth. I like the prefolds as you can tumble dry them and they line dry quickly too. I don’t find it a faff at all, in fact when I do use disposables (rare holidays) it’s more of a pain as I have to find a bin to throw the nappies away. Love my reusable nappies and love the big squishy bums they give babies!

Thank you everyone! I'll give a reuseable one a go!
