Meeting with consultant to discuss heavy bleeding in previous labour

Hi everyone

Just putting some feelers out to see if anyone has had experience with this or something similar.

My midwife has told me that I will be meeting with a consultant during this pregnancy as I lost a lot of blood (1.5 litres) during labour last time. Any idea what this could entail? I did ask my midwife at the time but she didn’t seem too concerned and said it was routine with ladies who have experienced high levels of blood loss. It has still left me a bit curious though!

I lost about 1 litre of blood during Labour first time round and in the meeting with the consultant they said they would inject something the moment I'm delivering so as to prevent heavy blood loss this time around. That was all I was told, hope it works!

Ah that doesn’t sound too bad! The midwife didn’t have me a bit worried when she mentioned a consultant but if they have a solution that isn’t too invasive then that’s a big positive. I assume that’s the kind of thing they would have on your note? I had a pretty quick labour last time and could barely talk due to constant contractions so really can’t see me being able to explain the situation if it’s fast (or faster!) again.

I had a minor blood loss (two litres) with my first baby. The consultant reviewed my notes and explained that my uterus hadn't contracted as it should have and she discussed my birth plan for the next one.
I was advised not to have a home birth and that I wouldn't be accepted in the MLU as I was now classed as high risk.
I had a cannula inserted aa soon as I was admitted. This wasn't hooked up to anything until the third stage.
I believe they did extra blood typing or cross matching or something so they could have blood on standby in case I needed it.
I had to have a managed third stage and I believe the injection they gave me was stronger than the one they'd normally use.
I was allowed to give birth in the pool and have delayed cord clamping but I had to get out to deliver the placenta. I think they waited until I was out to cut the cord and they let me sit around for a few minutes cuddling baby, we named her before I got out and took some photos.
I had the syntocinon drip for four hours after the placenta came away. This made me sick but they gave me IV anti sickness which stopped it.
In the end it was really well managed, I was out of hospital that afternoon (had her at half nine in the morning) and only had to stay that long because they had emergencies so didn't have time to discharge me. I only lost about 100ml this time and was surprised at how amazing I felt after - when my husband was putting my toddler to bed I popped the newborn in the sling and took her out for a walk.
Good luck with yours x

And yes, it goes on your notes and the midwife made sure everyone in the room was aware like when the second midwife came in for delivery. My second stage this time was only six minutes so I just about managed to tell the new midwife actually I'd like an epidural now please and she laughed at me 😂 bay was out about a minute after that

Thanks for sharing such a positive experience! I’m glad it’s something that can be managed. I’m pretty sure my blood loss last time played a huge part in my recovery so will be interesting to see how it plays out this time. My midwife couldn’t see anything in my notes about what caused the blood loss - hopefully they manage to find out somehow as surely it’s been documented somewhere. I was under the impression it was from the episiotomy but who knows!

Also well done on getting through such a fast delivery! Six minutes?! Shock
