Nausea - making yourself sick?

So I'm approaching 8 weeks now and the nausea is really getting me down. It's debilitating at times although It rarely progresses to actually throwing up.

I started thinking about when i was younger and I'd feel ill with alcohol on a night out or hungover the next day and sometimes I used to make myself physically sick to feel better (I can't be the only one?).

Anyway, has anyone actually made themselves throw up when feeling nauseous? Does it help? Or would it cause more harm than good? I haven't done it, I'm just feeling super nauseous today and getting desperate!

Yes, sometimes I put my toothbrush to the back of my throat and it instantly makes me gag and I'll usually throw up. Makes me feel better for about an hour until the nausea comes back x

When I was pregnant I was the opposite- I used to try not to be sick as the floodgates would open, as it were, and I wouldn't be able to stop so I'd have to spend the whole day on the bathroom floor. Throwing up actually made me feel worse and gave me a cracking headache to boot. Hope you feel better soon!

111 saved my life - called with heart palpitations and breathlessness in middle of the night, when I said I'd had surgery recently they had an ambulance with me in 5 minutes. They realised the seriousness of it literally within 30 seconds of me calling. Turns out I had a massive pulmonary embolism and ended up in resus and icu - was very much touch and go.

I agree that relying on a system such as they use won't catch everyone, and will send some to A&E who don't need it - but what's the alternative?

Vinosaurus · 05/01/2020 08:41

(yes, I know the alternative is a properly funded NHS and people using the system correctly, but we may be waiting a while for that)

@Beau2020 @katnissK thanks ladies. That's so interesting how different you both feel as to whether actually being sick makes you feel better! I'm willing to try anything though as the nausea is really getting me down.

@Vinosaurus wrong thread?

I have HG and so very sick until I get meds down me! I find with pregnancy sickness, being sick doesn’t help much unfortunately. I feel better for approx 5 minutes and then another wave of nausea hits me! My GP says when you have a stomach bug or food poisoning, throwing up starts to get the germ out your stomach & therefore you feel better for a while. Whereas pregnancy, the nausea is hormones which aren’t going anywhere. If they make you feel sick, they’ll continue to do so..

There are safe nausea meds, one is cyclizine. Some people find it really affective, ask your GP.

@sel2223 I’m the same as you - would always make myself throw up after a heavy nights drinking 😳

Also tried a couple of times with pregnancy nausea - it would sometimes work and make me feel better but most of the time the nausea would be back within the hour.

The first trimester is awful! But power through - you hopefully feel better in a few weeks 😊

Thanks for the replies. Turns out I didn't need to do that last night as my OH brought home a kebab and the smell had me throwing up all evening 🙈

I didn't feel any better physically being sick as opposed to just feeling sick.
