Incomplete anomaly scan WORRYING

I had my anomaly scan a few days ago and was asked to return in 2 weeks as the sonographer was unable to see the baby clearly enough due to me being "only" 19+4. She said some measurements are easier to get once you're past 20 weeks (???) She was also very specific that it had to be AT LEAST 2 weeks later (an appt 10 days later would not do, as first offered to me at the reception desk).

With my first DC I had a similar situation but it was due to baby position- I had to jump around/ eat some chocolate and problem solved. I have never heard of the baby size being an issue if you were less than 20 weeks pregnant... Especially as appts are routinely offered between 18-20 weeks and I am well into this bracket! The baby is measuring the correct size for gestation (it's not that the baby is smaller than expected) and she said that everything she had seen so far looked normal and she had no concerns.

Has anyone heard of this before?? I am stewing on it and becoming anxious.

Hi! At my 12 week scan I was basically tipped upside down on the table because the baby had decided to nestle itself into the back of my pelvis. Every scan since the baby has wriggled away from the probe! I just think he doesnt like being prodded!

I get the impression the size of the baby isnt the issue, its the position.

I had 2 attempts at my anomaly scan and they still didn't get a complete image of his heart. It wasn't until a growth scan at 28 weeks that they could tell me it looked ok. I was so worried for weeks. In my case it was position not size that was the issue. I'd say not to worry but that's pointless, you will worry. Definitely mention it to your midwife as she will hopefully be able to help you reassure yourself until the next scan comes around.

Yes, I’ve got 3 children and it happened to me at all three anomaly scans.
All was fine at the rescan every time.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I would've been happier if she had told me that it was because of the baby's position that she couldn't get the measurements/ images, as I've heard this happen to lots of people.

The bit that's playing on my mind is that she said it was because of the baby's size. I'm worried that she saw something and wants to wait another 2 weeks to see if changes/ develops Confused I could be over-thinking it, as I'm sure she would have a duty of care to make me aware of any issues she saw.

@elbeagle - were your rescans due to baby position or size?

@You0401 you're spot on, if she could see anything at all concerning she would have to tell you. I felt the same way and my midwife reassured me that they wouldn't be allowed to keep anything from you.

Elbeagle · 04/01/2020 20:45

They were all due to size. It seems I make mine on the smaller side early on, however they were 7lbs 13oz, 8lbs 9oz and and 7lbs 11oz respectively at birth, so not small.
It worried me the first time, as like you I couldn’t understand why other people have successful scans pre 20 weeks, but all was absolutely fine. I was used to it by number 3 and told them when I went in that it was probably too early for them to get the measurements (19+3). The sonographer ignored me but turned out I was right!

@goingtoneedabiggercar and @elbeagle thanks so much- you've both given me the reassurance I was hoping for! Smile I just wanted to hear from someone with the same experience.

Now to get through the next two weeks....

In both of my pregnancies so far I have had to return the following week to complete the 20 week scan so try not to worry! My sister had her scan a few weeks before me and she got to return an hour or so later due to babies position but despite my scan being in the morning they didn't offer this to me! I think it's just a factor of availability. Perhaps the sonographer just felt a further 2 weeks would allow the baby to be a bit bigger and more clear? It would make you 21 weeks which is when they requested me back both times in both my pregnancies.
I know it's easy to say, but try not to worry ❤️

My scan took three attempts- try not to worry. Mine was to do with position but she also said that it’s easier for them to see the heart a bit later on as things have grown a bit.
