Misdiagnosed twins!

I was told I was having twins at my 8 week ultrasound, however I've gone back a week later and now there is no sign on twins only 1 healthy baby.

Could the sonographer have misdiagnosed twins? I don't believe I had vanishing twin syndrome as I've had no pain or bleeding. There's also no signs of a miscarriage on the US.

I'm sorry that must be very confusing?
Did they show you the two babies on the first scan?

Beau2020 · 04/01/2020 12:25

@isittimetogotobed the very first scan we had at 6 weeks showed just one baby. The second scan showed two babies (that's the picture I posted) but then the third scan showed just one again 😔

There is a slight possibility that one baby could be blocking the view of the other, how long was your appointment? Did the Sonographers spend a good amount of time looking from all angles? Were you sent for a walk then another look?

There is of course the chance that it was misdiagnosed but you can clearly see 2 babies on the US so you must be so confused right now!

Beau2020 · 04/01/2020 12:30

@maria2bela hey Maria thanks for your message, I'm holding on to hope that they've missed it but the sonographer seemed pretty certain. He was looking around at all angles very clearly for around 30 mins but sadly informed me there was definitely only 1 baby. He even did a 4D scan. I feel so confused!

Doesn't matter if you believe in vanishing twin syndrome it exists and you don't need pain or bleeding. Last time I looked around 30% of early scans which your was so I suspect you underwent IVF? Show twins and of those 30% are no longer showing twins at the next scan.
The "twin" is so tiny they just become reabsorbed so no drama of bleeding or pain.
My "facts" are probably not quite correct and are def out of date because I looked it up 16years ago when my husband at the time decided to tell everyone straight after the 6 week scan I was expecting twins I was so upset with him, we had been warned about this by the ultra stenographer

Congratulations on you pregnancy

I had a vanishing twin. At my first scan at 7 weeks there were clearly two separate sacs each with a strong heart beat. One twin was much smaller than the other so they said it probably won’t survive. At 10 weeks twin 2’s heart beat had stopped and by 12 week scan the sac had considerably shrunk. At the 20 week scan there was no sign of twin 2.

It is a very common occurrence and if you don’t have an early scan you would never know about it.

Beau2020 · 04/01/2020 13:57

Thanks for your replies. I'm just feeling so confused as my 2 scans were literally on 5 days apart and yet so different. The smaller twin literally has just "vanished" but no remains can be detected and yet we saw a heartbeat on the earlier scan 5 days before. I really feel like the sonographer May have mistaken the twin 2 for a yolk sac perhaps?

No it wasn't IVF, just kept paying for reassurance scans

I was warned about vanishing twin syndrome and was told that we wouldn't know if both twins were viable until 12 weeks.
We were told it was reasonably common that one would just be reabsorbed without me being aware.
I'm sorry this wasn't made clear to you on your earlier scan.

Beau2020 · 04/01/2020 15:05

@jeffsar4 interesting! Yeah we saw a heartbeat on both but I'm thinking it could have just been a vibration and it was mistaken.

@dreichnolonger yeah it's a shame as I got my hopes up thinking it was twins and now I feel mixed emotions

I’m sorry you’re so worried about this, it is very strange. Focus on the positive though - you have at least one baby with a heartbeat 💗

dreichnolonger · 04/01/2020 15:28

I was very anxious about about the smaller bean and would have been very sad to lose it so I completely understand your mixed emotions OP.

mumwon · 04/01/2020 15:53

apparently many pregnancies do start off as twins & because no early scan is done it isn't recognised - Op think positively - while having twins seems lovely (in theory) they tend to be smaller & more likely to come prematurely than a single baby - so your one little bean will ( all things being equal) /is more likely to be a stronger fitter db & as many twin mummies will tell you - a lot less work & less expensive. Congrats on little bean - may he/she come out yelling nicely (& easily at the right time :) )

Beau2020 · 04/01/2020 15:56

Sonographer felt bad for me and gave me a 4D scan so little bean is healthy and happy, just feel really upset and guilty! @mumwon

don't ever ever feel guilty - you had your own little image of your little beans & you are naturally a little sad at the moment but I promise you as one beautiful bean grows this will fade & when db is born :) be kind to your self - as a mum there will be plenty of times you will feel guilty (& you shouldn't!) after db is born - look round mn!

Mum38YO · 12/12/2020 09:25

I had an ultrasound at 7 weeks, two sacs and 2 heartbeats. On a scan at 9 weeks there was only one heartbeat and was told the other baby hasn't progressed. Its so upsetting because nobody mentioned that this could happen
