Baby clothes

I'm due to have my baby at the end of April. I'm just wondering how many clothes I'll need I know every baby is different and I've already started buying items but trying not to buy too much as she's already getting spoilt and she's not even here yet. How many baby grows/vests did people have? Maybe just to get me through the first 6 weeks as that's all she will probably wear for the first few weeks. And maybe a cute little outfit for going out places which she has a few of already. I just meant more basic things that I'll need? Obviously she will be a spring baby so don't need thick clothes etc x

depends do you have a dryer, indoor airier or clothes line.If you have a quick way to dry clothes you will need less .But generally i would go for 10 short sleeve vests/sleep suits but 15 if your method of drying slower .Thats all they really need,Remember babys need one more layer than your wearing as they struggle to maintain their core temp

so for example

cold day

vest, sleep suit, padded snowsuit thick hat ,gloves

mild day

vest ,sleep suit ,light soft hat ,jumper or coat .

hot day

vest, romper /vest,dress socks ,if it cools cardigan

I went mad and bought loads of outfits the first time around. My baby lived in vests and babygrows so it was just a complete waste. Personally I'd want at least 10 of each, but I'm not the best at keeping on top of the washing Blush

I did like long sleeved vests for when it was cold. And hats! This time I'll definitely be sticking with mainly vests and babygrows though. Sounds like you've got a better idea than I did when I started out!

Congratulations by the way Smile

I second the don’t go wild on outfits. I also had several & DD never wore them! Its so much easier to dress them in sleepsuits or vests teamed with cute leggings maybe. The odd supersoft dungaree was nice for a trip out..! I personally found dresses really irritating on my 0-3 month old as they get so scrunched up! Dresses look so much nicer once they are sat up and they hang properly! But probs a personal preference!

I had at least 20 sleepsuits, maybe more! But I happened to have a very refluxy baby who got through at least 3 sleepsuits a day! And I was tired & couldn’t always be bothered to wash! But don’t stress about having them all bought before baby arrives. Obviously have maybe 10ish & see how you get on! Very easy to order a few more packs online after baby is here or you might fancy a trip to pick some up from somewhere!

Vest wise, I had a good selection of long & short sleeved.. DD was May born & we had a heatwave the week after she was born but then it went back to not overly warm. So both were useful!

Yes we do have a dryer and airer so can't quickly dry clothes.

What size do people normally buy new born or 0/3? I have about 4 new born baby grows and the rest I've been getting 0-3 month. People say not to buy too much newborn as only in it 2 minutes and obviously don't know how big or small baby will be.

Vest wise I have about 10 short sleeved so will get some long sleeved ones too.

She's got some socks and a few sets of hats and scratch mitts bought for her.

Thanks everybody for your help. Yes I would rather buy as and when we need rather than buying and wasting just wanted to know the essentials I'll need x

I would buy a small number of vests and sleepsuits in both newborn and 0-3. I wouldnt bother with outfits, you will probably get given some anyway and they are barely used.

As for "only in newborn for 2 minutes", my DD was in newborn clothes until about 9 weeks. She wasn't premature or anything, just on the small side.

It's impossible to predict but with the abundance of supermarkets and clothes shops around now, you dont need to predict really. If the baby is smaller than you expected, send partner/mum/friend to asda for more newborn vests. If they are bigger, go and get some 0-3 vests.

SnoozyLou · 04/01/2020 09:09

Our son measured big all along so we mainly bought 0-3. He was 10lb 5 at birth. His older sister bought him a lovely newborn outfit, but he was too big to get in it Confused

I'd go by their guesstimates. Some of the other babies on the ward looked tiny by comparison and his clothes would have buried them.

SnoozyLou · 04/01/2020 09:11

And a lot of the smaller baby grows have scratch mitts built in as the cuffs fold down - really handy.

chuffoff · 04/01/2020 10:04

Does anyone know of anywhere that does newborn babygros that go up to around 8lbs? My previous 2 were all 8lb and 9lb plus babies so they would only fit in 0-3 babygros from the start but this one (due next month) is measuring consistently on the 10th centile so looks like she will be a lot smaller. I am therefore going to have to buy some newborn babygros but they all seem to say up to 7lb 5oz. Despite the estimates, I still can't envisage having a baby that small but will accept the 0-3 size might be too big at birth. Want to be prepared but don't want to waste my money either!

rosydreams · 04/01/2020 11:55

i only ever buy 0-3 ,newborn a waste of money .They are not walking so it does not matter if their clothes are a little baggy

Jen306 · 04/01/2020 18:13

I’ve seen a few places do 1 month which is between newborn and 0-3 in terms of size which I’m tempted to go for instead of newborn just as might last a little longer but not drown them like 0-3! But it’s all guess work this is my first due end of April and I’m sticking with vests, sleepsuits (with built in scratch mits if possible!) and then a couple of cardigans I think. Plus hats!

FearnRJ · 04/01/2020 20:08

@Jen306 when are you due?

Yes I'm doing the same. I've already got a few newborn sizes for baby grows but going to get a few more and a few vests.

The rest I'm going to get 0-3 months x

Hi @FearnRJ! Im in the same boat as you, im due at the end of march and ive bought WAY too many sleepsuits. Like 20+! Ive also got some dungarees/vests etc (im having a boy).

Im smack bang on the 50th centile (at the moment) and have bought loads of 0-3 month old stuff, some 3-6 month old stuff but no newborn sizes at all. I kind of reasoned that he can have cuffs/trouser legs rolled up for a while if the clothes are too big as he wont be walking and tripping anywhere. I plan to make the clothes last!

PPopsicle · 04/01/2020 22:59

Please don’t waste loads of money on wonderful/cute baby grows...it felt so good if baby had a 💩 explosion to just throw clothes away that were too much to clean as they didn’t cost much, and trust me, a lot of their clothes end up covered in sick and 💩

FearnRJ · 04/01/2020 23:04

@Letsallscreamatthesistene I know what you mean! It's so so easy to over buy things I know I've already bought enough short sleeved vests to keep us going for a while I do need some long sleeved ones as none at all at the minute. As for baby grows I need to go through everything I've bought already and see how many I've got before I buy anymore. I plan of having around 10-15 baby grows and the same for short sleeved and long sleeved vests for when she's here. As people have said just buy once they are born and you know where you are and want you need more of rather than over buying x

Hi, my due date is also 24th April!! 👋🏻
I’d also add to what PP has said that you will get a LOT bought for you. I don’t consider us to be a couple who have a lot of people around us buying cards/pressies (for example, only received a small handful of cards when we got engaged), but when we had DD all these random (but lovely) people sent gifts, we had piles and piles of it. Friends of our mums that we had never met/not seen in years and years for example. I was grateful, but kinda sad I didn’t get to but any girls clothes for first 6 months or so (had only bought white pre birth).
Not expecting the same generosity this time round of course, which is totally fine!
So dont go too mad!
