Just realised with horror that the feta I ate yesterday was made from partly unpasteurised sheep/goat milk. Also read that I shouldn't eat salad...6wks, still on IVF hormones and turning into a wreck. Sorry for all the questions....have I screwed up? 6wks today...xxx

Chill OP- you can pretty much eat everything- obviously no raw eggs (damn I missed cake mix Wink).

SylvanianFrenemies · 01/01/2020 18:46

There is a lot of nonsense advice out there.

Look at the NHS advice online.

There are very few things that you can't eat.

SylvanianFrenemies · 01/01/2020 18:46

Salad is fine btw! Unless you are grazing straight from the land.

Shantotto · 01/01/2020 18:47

Where did you eat you can’t eat salad? Are you based in UK? Rules are slightly different depending where you live! I followed the NHS advice but even then chances of anything happening are incredibly small!

Ffsnosexallowed · 01/01/2020 18:49

And even raw eggs are fine if in UK and eating supermarket ones

Lalla525 · 01/01/2020 18:49

Just relax. You can eat salad, just need to wash it carefully (I wash it in bicarbonate)

You should not eat unpasteurized stuff. However, slipping once Carrie's a very low risk.

Also - read labels before eating. Jo point in doing so after.

TheGreyInThisCity · 01/01/2020 18:49

You can eat partially cooked eggs as long as they have the British lion stamp on them. General info about what not to eat here: www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/foods-to-avoid-pregnant/

Lalla525 · 01/01/2020 18:50

Raw eggs only if they have a red lion. Not all supermarket eggs can be eaten raw or undercooked

Dipsydoodle · 01/01/2020 18:51

If you're in the UK just follow the stuff on the NHS website. Lots of stuff online applies to other countries with different food standards, etc.

selmabear · 01/01/2020 18:58

You're fine eating salad OP. Ask your midwife for a list of what you can't eat. The list is relatively small. I wouldn't worry so much, enjoy your pregnancy.

buddhababy2019 · 01/01/2020 19:23

I was also told by the midwife about salad - apparently the pre-prepared bags are high risk for listeria so the new guidelines are to avoid and prepare your own

EstebanTheMagnificent · 01/01/2020 19:25

You can have raw eggs if they are lion stamped.

You can have hard cheese made from unpasteurised milk.

CFlemingSmith · 01/01/2020 19:30

As someone who’s baby survived on only a drip for 5 months with absolutely no vitamins etc I’m pretty lax about these sort of things. I would eat anything that isn’t raw

dementedpixie · 01/01/2020 19:31

You can have mouldy/blue/unpasteurised cheeses if you heat them first. Salad is fine.

Maggie272 · 01/01/2020 19:45

I'm in Ireland...yes just double checked and it's unwashed. We grow our own veg during the year so will be extra careful. Have also had a few days where all I wanted were scrambled eggs, which to me would constitute a cooked egg...? My husband just dove thru the rubbish and found the cheese wrapper...it was pasteurized. I'm going to lose my mind over this.
My mum who married I to a farm, which was home to many pregnant farm wives said not to worry. We grew up unpasteurised, apparently, and turned out fine. Fingers crossed xxx

The listeria diet is a bugger to follow. I'm currently on it but because I've just had treatment for MS. I keep forgetting everything.

During my pregnancies we were just told to avoid shell fish.. but that was 30 years ago.

dementedpixie · 01/01/2020 19:53

You're allowed cooked shellfish

Lalla525 · 01/01/2020 20:03

Scrambled eggs are undercooked. The funnier, the less coocked.

Lalla525 · 01/01/2020 20:04

*Runnier

Shantotto · 01/01/2020 20:06

Scrambled eggs are cooked surely?! You don’t leaves bits of it raw do you? I like mine lightly cooked but it’s not raw! And anyway look for lion stamped eggs and you’re fine

LH1987 · 01/01/2020 20:07

Im from Ireland and live in the UK, the difference in what you can eat is quite weird given how close the two countries are! Scrambled eggs are fine but the HSE says no to runny eggs (like fried ones), not sure why its different to the UK but I take the philosophy of just follow whatever guidance I'm being given :)

SnoozyLou · 01/01/2020 20:12

So far, I've convinced myself I had toxoplasmosis AND listeria. At the same time Smile

I don't take unnecessary risks. I have had Camembert, but cooked, which is fine. I haven't had undercooked meat. I have had cured meats, but froze them for 4 days first as this is supposed to kill the toxoplasmosis parasite.

I did eat unpasteurised soft cheese very early on, by accident. No point worrying about it - the risks from a one off are very low. It just isn't something I'd make a habit of.

I haven't eaten pate or liver. I eat seafood regularly. So long as it's cooked, it's ok. I eat smoked salmon regularly too.

Maggie272 · 01/01/2020 20:13

My scrambled eggs are definitely not runny ... What about the millions of women who lived on eggs for ever? I was eating a 99percent vegan diet but thought I'd take the odd bit of animal protein just in case. So far it's caused me nothing but worry...

Oh and I was eating preprepared lettuce until I saw this, but it does make sense to avoid it as I remember it causing listeria outbreaks before. To be honest, most of mine went in the bin anyway
