Cots for newborns

Hi everyone, okay this might sound really silly, but cots are safe to use from birth right? I know some people prefer to use a crib/moses basket for the first few months....but that's just purely preference right?

I have very limited space and so just wanted to get away with 1 item that I can use from birth and have opted for a cot bed. I have bought a Nuna Demi Grow travel system which also comes with a carry cot which is suitable for overnight sleeping, so I do have something smaller and portable should I need to use it, but the majority of the time I am planning to use the cot.

Yes, safe from birth although I've heard some babies get a little spooked by it being so big and it might take some getting used to. Safe sleeping guidelines are the same for any cot/crib.

Absolutely, as you say just a preference thing.

I've got a moses basket and getting a cot bed too I'm going to put the moses basket in the cot instead of on the stand and just leave the stand downstairs (limited space also) just as I think cots are a little to big for newborns but that's more personal preference. I think whichever works best for you

A lot of my friends didn't have space for the cot bed in their bedroom initially hence getting small crib until baby safe to sleep in their own room.
We had the cot bed in our room from 11 weeks as baby out grew the crib. It was a squeeze but fine. I could have done without the crib.

If you breastfeed laying down it’s possible for baby’s neck and shoulder muscles to develop so they can turn onto their sides (and even try going on their tummies which is a huge SIDS risk) by Day 4. Nobody told me this until after it happened with DS and MW advised using a sleepyhead / moses basket / carrycot so the expensive cot bed we bought is mainly unused.

Yes absolutely safe, just be sure to follow the guidelines on positioning and blankets, nothing in the cot etc. When I had my twins three years ago I’m sure the NHS advice was still that you could use blankets with specific guidelines, but I never felt comfortable so used sleeping bags once they were big enough. They still wear them now and they’re 3.

Thank you everyone for your help. My room is definitely small to have a cotbed and crib/moses basket (and possibly a nursing chair). Although I guess I could buy something smaller and leave the cot un-assembled until baby is bigger. I just feel like I've already spent quite a bit, and if I could get by without buying a crib/moses basket then it would be good.

I will probably use the carry cot which has come with my travel system if the baby finds it difficult to sleep in a big cot.
