Allergy Reaction - Can I take Antihistamines?

I think I've had an allergy reaction to dust or something from doing renovation work on our new house. (Photo attached) can I take antihistamines? Or do I need to get sign off from a doctor before I use it? I'm 7 weeks pregnant

I take a daily antihistamine (citirizine) for general allergies and the doctor said this is fine for me to continue taking during pregnancy, so I’m sure you’d be fine, you can purchase this one over the counter I think.

@Catlover10 amazing! Thank you! I'll grab some tomorrow ☺️

Loratadine (clarityn) is the one recommended to try as the first port of call in pregnancy because it has the most safety data, but cetirizine is also ok. I take loratatine daily for a dust allergy.

If antihistamines don't work, it may not be an allergy but something else, like irritation. Best to wear a mask when you do renovation, I would think.

My midwife okayed piriton syrup - check with the pharmacist when you go as they should be able to help!

Check with pharmacist first. X

I was advised to use piriton when i was pregnant. I suffer from awful hayfever so used it a fair bit and was fine.

greenlynx · 30/12/2019 23:07

I took loratadine (more than 10 years ago) for my hay fever but it’s at the very late stage of pregnancy.
Are you sure you need antihistamine? Maybe using some cream for your face and reducing contact with possible allergens would be enough. I would have a chat with GP or with pharmacist about it.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions - very appreciated! X

@greenlynx I tried to use sudocrem to help reduce the itchiness.. it helped for a bit but it didn't go away so I thought to try antihistamines instead hoping that will do the trick! Is there any other creams you would recommend?

I’m sneezing and eye itching so don’t need cream as such only because my skin is very irritated. I use Aveeno and basic Nivea cream (blue one). I was prescribed E45 itchy relief by GP recently but it’s for allergic reaction on my body, I never used it on the face. I’m looking at the bottle now and pregnancy/ using on the face hasn’t mentioned as a restriction but I would double check.

Def OK. The first line anti-sickness meds are all antihistamines (HG sufferer, I’ve tried them all) & considered completely safe in pregnancy. I took Loratidine for heyfever my entire first trimester last pregnancy without even considering I should check! I rang my doctor in a panic about 11 weeks and they weren’t remotely concerned Smile
