Hi everyone

Since being newly pregnant I've posted a few queries on here, and am so grateful for the responses. I hope it's ok to ask one more question...

I'm almost 6 weeks pregnant (on Wednesday : ) and so happy. Have had two losses in the past but never made it this far. You can imagine I'm a little anxious about every little twinge.

I had all my dental work done before getting pregnant, but last night I felt that old familiar feeling...toothache in one of my molars. Toothache always effects my ear and my throat a little too. I don't think it's an infection as I feel fine otherwise. I haven't had pain in my tooth for most of the day, just gentle throbbing, and my chemist said it was ok to take paracetemol.

I'm going to try to get to the dentist this week, and just wonder if anyone has ever had to have dental work - especially under anaesthetic...or if you've ever had to take antibiotics this early in pregnancy. Could I cause a miscarriage? I keep thinking of all the women who were having babies in the 70s and 80s (including my mum) who had to go to the dentist, smoked, drank, and took way more than one paracetemol. Just looking for reassurance

Much love to all

Maggie x

Last year I had a tooth out under sedation at 8 weeks, I didn’t know I was pregnant but there was a sigh in the loo saying to tell them if you are, only they can advise

I have had toothache and antibiotics (for a different problem) in pregnancy. The toothache was managed with paracetamol, and I had a white filling (local anasthetic) at around 20 weeks.

You need to tell the dentist you are pregnant and they will be able to make a safe plan for treating you. Hope your toothache is better soon - it’s the pits at any time, but especially during early pregnancy, I imagine!

I'm a dental nurse and the dentist I work with wouldn't like to do anything at 6 weeks or prescribe antibiotics.
Tbh the dentists I work with don't really like to do treatment on pregnant women at all but if they do they tread very very carefully on LA choice etc. Inform your dentist you're pregnant as soon as you get through the door. Chances are they won't do anything as you're still early on in pregnancy. I hope it's just a niggle and baby playing around with your teeth (they like to do this 🤣).
Congratulations on your pregnancy x

My teeth started to fall apart when I fell pregnant, my dentist was like my second home 😂

I had a few temporary fillings until after the baby was born, she wouldn't fit any permanently but they all stayed in fine.

Mention you're pregnant when you see your dentist and they'll be able to help.

Thank you all so much for your responses! Just been to my dentist who is female and has a child, apparently all the hormones cause extra problems with gums so that's all it is...but she said antibiotics and anaesthetic are totally safe and don't cause miscarriage or defects...if anyone else has the same question I hope this helps xxx
