Hi there! I’m 7+3 weeks pregnant with my second baby, however my doctors are telling me that they no longer do the booking appointment which should take place before 10 weeks and the first midwife appointment I’ll have will be at 16 weeks. I can’t see any information that this is correct and can’t see on the nhs website that this has changed. Has anyone else been told this? I just feel like I’m being fobbed off! I’m in the Manchester area!

I'm 10 weeks and my first midwife appointment is tomorrow. How will you get 12 week scan and screening sorted if you don't have a midwife appointment until 16 weeks.
Did they give you any info on that?

erised · 30/12/2019 20:39

Had mine at 9 weeks. I was told to self-refer through my local hospital website (Hampshire area).

BelfastNonBlonde · 30/12/2019 20:41

12 week scan / booking appt combined

Bol87 · 30/12/2019 20:42

That doesn’t seem right.. your booking appointment should be around 8-10 weeks. They’ll book your 12 week scan & take bloods.. have they mentioned how you’ll get your 12 week scan booking if you aren’t seeing the midwife until 16 weeks? You should have a 16 week appointment as well..

I’d try to contact the midwives directly, ask the doctors for a number or goggle it! I’m in Yorkshire & I phoned my GP who advised they no longer have a midwife at the surgery but gave me the number for the local midwife team!

Holmes1990 · 30/12/2019 20:42

I am 7 weeks tomorrow and going to call the hospital in the morning to start the process. First appointment at 16 weeks doesn't seem right to me! I would call again and speak to someone else.

Anon234 · 30/12/2019 20:43

With all 3 of my children I had an appointment between 8-10 weeks. I would then receive details of my 12 week.scan appointment in the post a week or so later. How will you get your scan appointment without seeing the midwife first?

Crazypanda85 · 30/12/2019 20:44

I had my booking appointment (spoke with midwife about my health history, bloods taken, weighed etc) at 7 weeks 5 days. Next appointment is my scan at week 12.
Unless they take bloods etc at your first scan? Haven't heard of that before though.

Boymummy3 · 30/12/2019 20:46

GPS don't do booking appointments you either book in with a community midwife located usually at the surgery or you self refer yourself to one based at your hospital. You need to give the hospital a call and see how you self refer as you have your booking app between usually 9/10 weeks. With my first two it was self refer to hospital but with this one they are doing it via community midwife through the surgery.

Freshair89 · 30/12/2019 20:46

I had to self refer direct to the hospital (went on their website and filled in a form) a week later I received two letters in the post, one confirming my midwife appointment and the other confirming my 12 week scan date

Essexgirlupnorth · 30/12/2019 20:46

I'm in Manchester and had my booking appointment at the hospital on Christmas eve when 9+5. My first pregnancy I had the booking appointment at my GP but some hospitals do them at the hospital. Which one do you want to book at? I am a st. Mary's.

KPB1234 · 30/12/2019 20:47

Thank you everyone! I mentioned re the scan and I’ve filled in a referral form for the hospital that I would like to have the baby at so they’ve said the hospital will contact me directly! They couldn’t answer when I asked about the screening tests. I’ll try and find the number for the midwife direct tomorrow and give them a call! Just wanted to double check I was definitely correct! That doesn't seem right at all. I had to self refer - my GP gave me the number - and then I had my booking appointment at 10 weeks. I then also had a 16 week appointment after that.

KPB1234 · 30/12/2019 20:50

Yes St Mary’s as well, I’m in the catchment for Wythenshaw but had my first at St Mary’s and it’s actually easier for us to get to so wanted to go there again. I filled in the referral form last week so maybe I’ll get something in the post soon, but I’ve tried to book in with the midwife through my GP three times and they keep telling me to call back at 16 weeks! So frustrating because I know I’m right!

Yeah I’m trying to book in with the midwife at the surgery, not with the GP, but they keep telling me to ring back at 16 weeks as it’s a new policy apparently!

I'm in the catchment for Tameside but had my first at St. Mary's and work there so easier.
I actually spoke to the midwives at Tameside as they will see me postnatally who referred me across and got a letter through the post with my details. Maybe give them a call I'd you haven't heard anything. Midwife then booked my scan. Wythenshawe and St. Mary's are now all one trust so might work differently now.

Definitely call the community midwife team. I'm 18 weeks now and had my booking in at 8 weeks. Surely you need to speak with a midwife regarding any concerns, family history, and medical exemption? I hate how pregnancy and giving birth is effectively fobbed off in the UK - other countries really do seem to care about expectant/new mother's far more!

xxchlobo90xx · 30/12/2019 22:53

I'm 5+1 and called and made an appointment today for the 21st jan, just after I'm 8 weeks. You should def get one earlier than that ! X

mumoffluffs · 29/01/2020 14:52

Hi! A little late on this thread, but I'm 6+4 and was told by my GP my first appointment will be at 14 weeks which also didn't sound right based on the NHS website (should have booking between 8-10 weeks and screening tests before 10 weeks, followed by 12 week scan).

I'm being referred to Chelsea and Westminster, but just really concerned as this is my first pregnancy and I won't be seen until 2 weeks into my second trimester???

Have you managed to have any appointments yet @KPB1234 ?

anotherypasswordtoremember · 29/01/2020 15:09

Yeah I agree with the ladies saying that sounds odd. My booking in appointment is at 8 weeks then I'll get a letter in the post about 12 week scan.
Can you find the information on the website for your NHS trust? It might be better info. 16 weeks sounds nuts! your only 4 weeks off your abnormalities scan at that point.

KPB1234 · 29/01/2020 15:27

Hi!

Yes it all got sorted. The booking appointment was arranged direct by the hospital, so the GP was correct in that I don’t see the midwife there until 16 weeks, but never informed me that I’ll hear from the hospital direct for my booking and scan. I had my booking appointment at 10 weeks and we have just had our scan this morning actually ☺️☺️

Give your hospital a ring direct if you’ve not heard anything by the time your 8 weeks. You’ll probably receive an appointment direct from them.xxx

@KPB1234 amazing! I'm glad its all sorted!

Today's scan must have been super exciting!

My GP mixed up my chosen hospital (without informing me they decided to change it) and just had a little stressful hour going back and forth to the GP to collect a hospital letter, luckily they changed it back to what it should have been, hoping things are smoother from now on! The referral letter mentioned I'll have a telephone appointment so I'm assuming that may be the basic details and arranging future appointments.
