5w3d scan - no embryo but to start dalteparin injections

Hi everyone

I had a scan today because of shoulder pain and my history. I am 5w3d by my LMP. A sac was seen and yolk but no embryo yet which they said is normal.

Sac is 4.3mm and I do have a bleed above it.

Now pregnancy is confirmed to be in correct location I am starting dalteparin injections, has anyone got any advice on these? I'm terrified!

Thanks everyone xx

Anyone?

I'm so nervous for my scan on Saturday 😖 and these injections are horrible and I'm so bruised but all will be worth it if we have a healthy baby x

Sorry you didn't get any advice. How did you get on Saturday?x

ec1993 · 05/01/2020 19:45

It's okay, thank you @Roomarmoset.

I had my scan and baby has a heartbeat, measuring a couple days under but they said it's completely normal. How are you? Xx

Congrats! Looks beautiful from here.

I’m having dalteparin injections daily at the moment (to prevent DVT after surgery). What advice were you given on how to do it? I’ve not found it too bad, although I have had a couple of corking bruises. Happy to share more.

I had them from embryo transfer and am currently 4 weeks post partum and will likely have them for another 2 weeks. What did you want to know?

ec1993 · 05/01/2020 21:37

Thank you @eternalfun, it's really strange as I'm not needle phobic at all but I still cannot inject myself no matter how hard I try.

My DH has been a gem and has been doing them for me, they are a little skinny but I find they are less so in my tummy than in my thighs. He said he felt as if he had to "push" through more in my thigh which probably made it more stingy but he's been fab. I was given no advice, told to collect prescription and follow instructions. Hope you are doing okay after surgery

Congratulations on your new baby @GrumpyHoonMain Thanks I'm just bruising a lot etc xx

To avoid bruising it can help if your DH pinches your upper thigh really hard when he gives you the injection and keeps it pressed when he sticks the needle in. Also, don’t stick the needle all the way to the plastic as that often causes both pain and bruising - just put the minimum amount of needle in.

Of topic too but my consultant also said my newborn might be more slightly at risk of clotting problems at birth because of the heparin and advised me to allow the vitamin k injection for the baby (as opposed to the drops) as that worked faster to prevent any complications. Suggest you talk to your consultant about it too. Best of luck in your pregnancy.

I had a nurse show me before I left hospital as I’ve never done it before. I agree about the pinching skin advice. That definitely helps. I think it helped that I was on lots of painkillers initially so it didn’t hurt at all!

Not sure about how far or not to push the needle in. I was told the whole way. I found wearing tight jeans brought the bruising out mid too.

Good luck with the pregnancy. Xxx

More not mid. Am lying in bed with sleeping daughter, writing one handed!

I had a weekend of the blood thinners after a DVT scare. It was very not fun, my sympathies x

ec1993 · 06/01/2020 05:27

Thank you @GrumpyHoonMain the instructions say to push the needle all the way in so that's what we've been doing but I am bruising. I guess I'm going to have to get on with it, I'm so grateful to have even got this far because of my recurrent miscarriages so hopefully these help this baby to stick x

@eternalfun thank you, I do pinch the most fat I can. Thankfully in this case I do have more than an inch to pinch 😂 thank you x

@BecauseReasons they are not nice! I've had them after surgery etc but always done by a nurse and when I was still feeling the effects of anaesthetic! X
