So I was tested for gestational diabetes at 28 weeks didn't hear anything back so assumed it was all clear, my mum has type 1 diabetes and has a blood testing kit I've been really thirsty so I tested myself tonight my blood sugar level came back as 17.5 should I contact my midwife about this? Thanks

Contact your midwife and ask her to clarify last results and also keep a blood sugar diary for the next few days if you are unable to get an appt. Fasting (first thing when you wake up) and 2 hours after each main meal. Keep a food/drink diary also (just in case you to have GD you will know what foods make it worse). Try not to worry too much. I had GD at 12 weeks and all was ok. Theres a great website www.gestationaldiabetes.co.uk which gave me far better info than the GD team

@Chista thanks for the advice will do!

I was diagnosed at 35 weeks and that was after 2 GTT that were fine and a zillion pee tests at each antenatal appointment. It was also triggered by me realising I was drinking a lot more than normal and in fact just a throwaway comment to my consultant. I really would contact your midwife as since the diagnosis my sugars have been erratic despite 2 different types of insulin injections. Granted none have been as high as yours but still not controlled and I'm now being induced at 37+4 as a result 😊 in fact I'm at the hospital now and bored silly!

Absolutely. You need to be tested a.s.a.p. There is still a possibility that it could be type 1 as well. If you don't get tested by someone today, go to a & e. I know mumsnet is anti A&E but high blood sugars can be very dangerous for your baby.

I had a GTT today and am now worried as I didn't realise it could be missed 😔

When my midwife suspected GD sent me for a glucose test and at the start result was 11.5 - nurse was so shocked she dropped the tester and sent me straight up to the diabetic clinic. I have type 1 and no symptoms other than the baby measured a bit big. Get yourself to a doctor ASAP 17.5 is very high.

Pipandmum · 30/12/2019 14:15

Should add my son is now a strapping 16 year old and I went on to have another child.

LH1987 · 30/12/2019 14:31

Hi, sorry if I am pointing out the obvious but be sure your hands are totally clean when you do any tests. Some hand creams have glucose substances in them or even you could have a tiny little bit of something sweet on your hand and it can affect the test. Either way definitely contact the midwife :) Good luck.

LH1987 · 30/12/2019 14:32

Also, if it is GD, that isn't the end of the world, I have type 1 and its all going swimmingly so far.

Besidesthepoint · 02/01/2020 19:36

@emmab96

How are you doing?

emmab96 · 02/01/2020 19:42

@Besidesthepoint yeah I'm all okay thank you! I spoke to the midwife who advised me to call day assessment and they sort of said that mg mums machine isn't calibrated for someone who is pregnant (which I didn't know what a thing) so she said that they would just check my urine for
sugar etc at my next appointmentConfused

When is your next appointment? I find the machine thing a bit weird. I have type 1 myself and used the same meter for when I was pregnant as before. Your mums could be an old one maybe?

emmab96 · 02/01/2020 20:49

@Besidesthepoint it's a new machine which is why I found it weird when she said it wasn't calibrated for pregnancy because I thought they all worked the same? My next appointment isn't until the end of January and that's with my GP not my midwife I don't see her until February but I mean if they wasn't worried then I figured maybe I was just overthinking itConfused

I had GD and honestly it was fine. I followed largely the same diet as I did pre-pregnancy due to my PCOS, baby was fine and actually arrived early due to my waters breaking rather than big baby. In fact, she was only 5lb 13oz at 37 weeks.

The most annoying thing was all the extra scans, but I think it depends on the flexibility of your job and distance from the hospital. I’m a teacher and hospital is half an hour away so lots of faff leaving instructions for supply teachers etc.
